If I Were a Blackbird - Geraldine Sexton
Written by:Delia Murphy
If I was a blackbird I'd whistle and sing
And I'd follow the ship that my true love sails in
And on the top riggings I'd there build my nest
And I'd pillow my head on his lily white breast
I am a young maiden and my story is sad
For once I was courted by a brave sailor lad
He courted me strongly by night and by day
But now my dear sailor is gone far away
I sailed over the ocean his fortune to seek
I missed his caress and his kiss on my cheek
He courted my truly his friendship was warm
And I long for the sight of his brave manly form
If I were a blackbird I'd whistle and sing
I'd follow the ship that my true love sails in
On the top rigging I'd there build my nest
And I'd pillow my head on his lily-white breast
He promised me to take me to Donnybrook Fair
He'd buy me a red ribbon to tie up my hair
And when he'd return from the ocean so wide
He'd take me and make me his own loving bride
His parents they slight me and will not agree
That me and my sailor boy married should be
But let them deprives me and do what they will
While there's breath in my body he's the one that I love still
If I was a blackbird I whistle and sing
And I follow the vessel my true love sails in
And on the top rigging I would there build my nest
And I'd pillow my head on his lily-white breast
If I was a blackbird I'd whistle and sing
And I'd follow the ship that my true love sails in
And on the top riggings I'd there build my nest
