Rain keeps tapping on the window
While I look through photographs
That old room is still there
That station hasn't changed
I can see the streets so clearly
Every corner, every door
But I can't remember how that place
Used to sound anymore
The crossing changing
A train somewhere far away
Rain against the rooftop
Back then
I let it all pass through me
I didn't lose the picture
I lost the sound around it
All those ordinary noises
Held a time I couldn't see
I can't go back there anymore
But listening brings it near
The days I barely noticed then
Have finally found a voice
So I started keeping little recordings
Pieces of a life still happening
A key turning in the lock
A train arriving at the platform
The refrigerator humming late at night
Thin rain against the glass
Nothing sounded worth remembering
Whenever I played it back
Years later in another room
I opened an old file
And through my headphones
That station came alive
Beyond the crowd
A melody I knew
Someone laughing in the distance
And suddenly the air came back too
What I wore that evening
What was running through my mind
Things no photograph had captured
Were waiting inside the sound
Rain
Keys
A distant train
Footsteps passing somewhere nearby
Memories without names
I could stand in the same place again
But I could never record that day twice
Tonight the rain is falling
On a window somewhere new
One car passes down the street
A dog barks once and disappears
Nothing special is happening
Still, I press record
Maybe this ordinary night
Will be something I miss someday
Even the sounds I barely hear
Will slowly drift away
So I'll keep them while they're here
Until they become
The sound of where we were
The numbers keep moving
Across the screen
While the rain
Keeps recording itself
