Daddy I drew you smiling today
With a big red mouth and yellow hair
I hung it on the fridge where it'll stay
So you can see it everywhere
She came home from school with a paper in her hand
Crayon all over it colors bright and grand
Said Daddy look I drew you this is what you look like
And I looked at the paper and it hit me like a strike
There I was with a smile that went ear to ear
Mouth curved up happy no sadness no fear
But I hadn't smiled like that in maybe a month or two
I'd been carrying weight that was making me blue
She said Daddy why you quiet don't you like what I made
I said baby I love it I'm just amazed
Daddy I drew you smiling today
With a big red mouth and yellow hair
I hung it on the fridge where it'll stay
So you can see it everywhere
I said baby why'd you draw me smiling so big
She said cause that's how you look when you forget to be sad
She said I see you smiling when you think I'm not looking
When you're making my lunch when you're reading my book
She said that's the real you Daddy the sad is just a cloud
That comes and goes away but the smile is what you're about
She said I drew the real you so you could see him too
Cause sometimes you forget him when the day is through
And I held that drawing like it was a mirror to my soul
Seeing myself through her eyes finally made me whole
Daddy I drew you smiling today
With a big red mouth and yellow hair
I hung it on the fridge where it'll stay
So you can see it everywhere
And I stuck that drawing on the fridge with a magnet and a tear
Looked at it every morning when the dark was drawing near
She'd drawn me happy when I'd forgotten how to be
She'd drawn me smiling when smiling was hard to see
EVERY crayon stroke was a reminder of the truth
That the real me was still in there still under the roof
And I started smiling more not cause I had to cause I could
Cause my daughter drew me happy and she understood
Daddy I drew you smiling today
With a big red mouth and yellow hair
I hung it on the fridge where it'll stay
So you can see it everywhere
