If Not This Life

We wrote our names in shifting sand

And built our home with trembling hands

But tides were strong and winds were wild

And time, it never stayed a child

You kissed me once then turned to go

I kept your shadow in my heart

If not this life, then when it’s new

We didn’t end, we just postponed

Like lullabies in autumn leaves

And every face I pass today

I scan for you who went away

They say the soul remembers well

If not this life, then one more life
