Wind slips over the tips of the grass
Leaving little waves behind
The pale side of every leaf turns over
And even the sky seems to move
Stones by the river still hold the warmth
While the shade feels cool against my skin
The scent of damp earth and growing green
Slowly settles with every breath
A bird calls somewhere far away
A bicycle crosses the bridge
So many sounds would disappear
If I never stopped to hear them
Water keeps moving as water will
Wind passes softly through the reeds
Light breaks apart across the river
Shifting with every little stream
So much of this can never be held
Still, somehow, it feels so near
Standing here without doing anything
I can feel the whole world move
In the shallows, water touches stone
Repeating a quiet rhythm
A cloud moves slowly over the sun
And all the silver fades from the river
Then the light returns without warning
Catching only the wet leaves first
The breeze against my cheek feels different now
A little cooler than before
A distant train moves out of sight
Leaving only sound behind
At my feet, the narrow grass
Leans together with the wind
Water keeps moving as water will
Wind keeps changing without a shape
Even when the view looks almost still
Nothing stays the same
I don't need to give it a name
I don't need to know what it means
Close my eyes and everything around me
Is already enough to hear
Dry wind
Damp earth
Cool shade
Lingering warmth
Wings in the distance
Water close by
Layer after layer
The afternoon
Becomes evening
The river keeps moving quietly
Wind slips between the evening grass
Light grows thinner over the water
Drifting toward the edge of the sky
Nothing has to begin here
Nothing has to reach an end
Standing still inside this moment
I can almost see time passing
Crickets rise into the silence
Colors loosen from the river
Still the water carries on
Still the wind moves somewhere beyond
After the last light disappears
The river is still there in the dark
Out of sight
But never still
Quietly in motion
