Velvet Lights
Golden hours fall like silk
Across the river through the room
Every sound is dressed in glow
Every moment dressed in bloom
Chandeliers breathe soft and low
Diamonds speak without a sound
Perfume hangs in careful air
Nothing here is truly found
Silhouettes in tailored grace
Moving like a held-back sigh
Every smile is perfectly placed
Every truth politely lied
I stand where the music slows
Watching moments pass me by
All this beauty
Asks nothing of my heart
Velvet lights upon the water
Turning dreams into display
Every wish looks almost real
From a distance far away
They say love was meant to last
In rooms that shine this bright
But all I hold
Is the echo of the night
Crystal time inside a glass
Pour it slow and watch it fade
Promises in satin words
Carefully performed then played
Names dissolve into applause
Fame drifts lightly through the air
Everyone is someone here
Yet no one truly stays
I raise my eyes not my voice
I learn the art of standing still
All this splendor
Never asks what I feel
Velvet lights upon the water
Gold that trembles when I breathe
Every dream looks almost human
When it’s seen but not believed
They say hearts don’t break at night
When the world is dressed this way
But dawn remembers
Everything we say
If I touch the glow
It disappears
If I let it pass
It follows me
There’s no difference anymore
Between wanting
And remembering
Velvet lights upon the water
Still pretending not to fade
We keep dancing with the idea
That this beauty might be stayed
When the music learns to sleep
And the room forgets our names
All that’s left
Is the silence dressed as flame
The lights go on
The river stays
And somewhere
Yesterday remains
