I had nothing that required my attention
With any particular kind of tension
For the afternoon, and the rain had come
And I was at the café with the hum
Of the espresso and the low-lit room
And nothing in the day requiring a resume
Of effort, just the window and the street
And the rain, and nothing else to meet
Watching the rain from inside here
Watching the rain, and everything is near
And slow, the drops along the glass
Watching the rain, the minutes as they pass
Without demanding anything of me
Watching the rain is all I need to be
Doing right now, in this warm and slow
Watching the rain and watching it go
A drop starts at the top and finds its line
Of least resistance, and I find the fine
And meditative quality of following
Its path without the swallowing
Of anything more complicated than
The rain and the particular plan
It makes along the surface of the glass
Watching each one, watching as they pass
Watching the rain from inside here
Watching the rain, and everything is near
And slow, the drops along the glass
Watching the rain, the minutes as they pass
Without demanding anything of me
Watching the rain is all I need to be
Doing right now, in this warm and slow
Watching the rain and watching it go
This is the most unproductive thing
I have done in weeks, and it's offering
Something to the part of me that's worn
From the always-doing and the torn
Attention of the regular life
The watching of the rain, no strife
No outcome and no purpose and no end
Just the rain on glass, around the bend
The café has been quietly filling up
And I'm still on the first and only cup
That I ordered when I first came in
And the afternoon has folded within
Its own unhurried self, and I have been
Inside the window and the space between
The rain and me for longer than I knew
Watching the rain, and nothing left to do
Watching the rain from inside here
Watching the rain, and everything is near
And slow, the drops along the glass
Watching the rain, the minutes as they pass
Without demanding anything of me
Watching the rain is all I need to be
Doing right now, in this warm and slow
Watching the rain and watching it go
The rain is still going, I'm still here
The café and the window and the clear
Lack of anything required of the afternoon
Watching the rain, and I'll be going soon
