By my window, wings pass by
Painted patterns pierce the pale sky
Drifting down, then rising high
Your path so sure, so clear to find
While I watch and wonder why
Nature pulls you toward your line
You know exactly where to go
Some compass guides you through the cold
My heart's direction lost its way
These feet forgot how far to stray
Morning mist, migration calls
Faithful flocks in familiar falls
Between these walls, I track your trail
Through bitter winds and morning hail
Your instinct never seems to fail
While mine grows weaker, thin and frail
(Do you still wait there?)
Beyond the mountains broad and bare
(Do the springs still flow?)
Through paths I used to know
(Is the air still sweet?)
With scents of ripened wheat?
Seasons spinning, swift and strong
Each return proves what I've known all along
That nature blessed your beating heart
With certainty I fell apart
Your wings could carry worlds away
While anchored here, I have to stay
You know exactly where to go
Some compass guides you through the cold
My heart's direction lost its way
(These feet forgot how far to stray)
Past mountains high and valleys deep
The way back home's too far to keep
