Same Tree

I had a dream last night

I lived in the ground

My roots dug down deep

With every breath

A thousand leaves would shake

And the old earth would creak

My roots were a love song

Hands clasped tight

For a million years

With all of my sisters and all of my brothers

We all cry the same tears

The way the wind blows the waterfalls

We are a part of it all

The breath inside of you inside of me

So much these days is us and them

Caught up in a case of othering’

But we all come from

Ashes on my tongue

from a page that needs to turn

Anger is the spark of a world that’s learning

You can’t fight fire with fire

or there’ll be nothing left to burn

Divisiveness and righteousness

Are wind upon the flames

Underneath the words we speak

We are all the same

A trunk is a passage from the earth to the sky
