Dr mark Zuckerberg

I love thank you all for coming out in the rain pouring rain where to make these words for you President faust board of o verse ears

XA

Friends of a night

Proud parents

Numbers of d eg board and graduates of the greatest university in the world I am honored To Be here you today because the face it

Your cup is something I never could if I get through 的

Speech today it will be the first time I actually finished something here however class to twenty seventeen congratulations now an unlikely speaker today

Not just because I dropped out but because were technically in the same generation

We walk d yd less than a decade apart

We studied the same ideas and slept through the same act ten lectures

We may have taken different roads To Get here especially to k Mol to share what ive learned about our generation and world were all buildings together

But first these last couple days brought back a lot of good memories

Many of you remember exactly where you were and what you are doing when you got that email telling you got into Harvard

I was playing video games of a Liz Asian and I ran to video me opening email

That could have been a really really sad video

Where get into Harvard is Li zing my parents are most to me for my mom

You know talking about

Le I thought To Be there still still when you get out there

How many of you remember your first let your here at Harvard

I was running late for class

So I thought a t shirt and other Rose until afterwards I put it on inside out and backwards my chat with taking out I cant figure out why no none class to talk to me

I I face book and that class to twenty seventeen is why should be nice to people

But my best memory from Harvard is meeting priscilla

I m just launched this prank website face masks

An d ed board wanted to see me

Everyone thought I was gonna get kicked out

My parents drove up here to help me pack my stuff

My friends threw me a going away party who does that

I thought it would have a personal lives at that party with her friends and we met in line for the bathroom in de phoTo Bell tower

And one must be one of the all time most romantic lines I turned her instead

I think it down three days it quickly actually any of you graduating

I m getting kicked out

I do that myself

Personal and I started a ting and you know that movie made it seem like face masks was so important to starting Facebook

我忍

But without face mash up I never would have met priscilla

And per SP is the most important person in my life

So you could still stay with them ost important thing I built in my time here

We have all started life long friend ships here and some of us even families

Thats why I m so grateful to Dis placed

Thanks Harvard

Today I wanna talk about purpose

From up here To Give you d stand or come ent about finding your purpose or Mo ni es

We try to do and instinct iv Li

Instead I m here to tell you that finding your purpose isnt enough

The challenge for our generation is to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose

One of my favorite stories

Is when jfk went To Go visit a NASA space center ne saw Janet are holding a broom and he asked what he was doing in de gen er replied Mr President I m helping put a man on the moon

Purpose is that feeling that you are a part of something bigger than yourself

That you are needed and you have something better ahead to work for

Purpose is what creates true happiness

And you are graduating at a time when does is especially important

When our parents graduated that sense of purpose reliability came from your job your church your community

But today technology and automation are eliminated in many jobs

Membership in a lot of communities has been dec lining and a lot of people are feeling disconnected and depressed and are trying to fill a void in their lives

S I traveled around I just talked with children in juvenile de tent and o p ox he told me that maybe their lives would it turned out differently if they just had something to do and after school program or somewhere To Go

I bet factory workers you know their old jobs aren t coming back and just try to find their path ahead

D to keep moving forward we have a generation ul challenge to not only create new jobs but create it renewed sense of purpose

I remember that night I launched Facebook from

That little dorm in Turkey in house

I went to those with my friend k at

And I remember telling him clearly that I was excited to help connect the Harvard community but one day someone would connect the whole world

The thing is it never occurred to me that someone might be asked you just college kids you know anything about that

The road is great big technology companies involved es resources and I just I m going to them would do

But the idea is so clear that all people want to connect

And I know that a lot of you are gonna have your own stories just like this

A change in the world that seems so clear that you are sure someone else is going to do it

But do not you will

But its not enough to have that purpose yourself

You ought to have to create a sense of purpose for other

And I found out the hard way

You see my hope was never To Build a company I wanted to have an impact

And it is always people started joining us I just assumed that thats what day wanted to do to so I never took the time to explain what it was that I hope to rebuild

A couple years in some big companies wanted To Buy it

I dont wanna sell

I want to see if we could connect more people

And we were building the first version of news feed at that time and I thought if we could just launch this you can change how we all learn about the world

Nearly everyone else wanted to sell

A sense of higher purpose their startup dream come true and it tore our company apart

After one particularly tense argument one of my close advisors told me if I dont agree to sell the company right now I would regret that decision for the rest of my life

Relationships were still fried in a year so every single person on our management team was gone

That was my hardest time leading Facebook

I believe in what we were doing but I felt alone

And worse

It was my fault

I wonder if I was just wrong and pasta a twenty two year old kid who had no idea how things actually worked

Now years later I understand that is how things work when there is no sense of higher purpose so it is up to all of us to create it so we can all keep moving forward together

In today I wanna talk about three ways that we can create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose

By taking on big meaningful projects together

By re def I Ning a quality so everyone has the freedom to pursue their purpose and by building community all across the world

The first lets take on big meaningful projects

Our generation is gonna have to deal with tens of millions of jobs or replaced by automation like self driving cars and trucks that we have the potential to do so much more than that

Every generation has its day finding work more than three hundred thousand people work to put that man on the moon including that Janet er

Millions of volunteers in eyes children around the world against polio and millions of more people built to move or dam and other great projects

And now its all generations turn to do great thing

Now I know maybe you are thinking I know how To Build it down

I know how To Get a million people involved in anything

Let me tell you a secret

No one does when day begin

Ideas dont come out fully formed

They only become clear as you work on them

You just have To Get started

If I had to know everything about connecting people before I got started I never would have built Facebook

Movies and pop culture just get this all wrong

D idea of a single eureka moment isa dangerous lie

It makes us feel an advocate because we feel like we have an had ours yet

And it prevent people with seeds of good ideas from ever getting started in the first place

Okay and you know what else movies get wrong about innovation

Known right smack on glass okay I think OK

Its really good To Be idea lis tic

But be prepared To Be mis understand

Anyone working on a big vision is gonna get called crazy even if you end up right

Anyone will always get critic ise for moving too fast because there is always someone who wants to slow you down

In our society we often dont take on big think so afraid of making mistakes

That we ignore all things wrong today if we do nothing

The reality is

Anything we do today

It is gonna have some issues in the future

But that cant stop us from getting started

So what are we waiting for

It is time for our generation to finding great work

How about stopping climate change before we destroy the planet and getting millions of people involved manufacturing and solar panel

L ec Turing all diseases and getting people involved by asking volunteers to share their health day to track their health data and share their genome you know today

Our society spent more than fifty times as much treating people resist is we invested finding cures so people get sick in the first place

It makes no sense

We can fix does

How about modern I zing democracy so everyone can vote online

And how about personal ise in education to everyone can learn

D the achievements are all with in our reach

Lets do them all in a way that gives everyone in our society or roll

Lets do big sings not just to create progress but to create purpose

The taking on big meaningful projects together is the first thing we can do to create a world where everyone has a sense of purpose

The second is re define ing or idea of equality so everyone has the freedom to pursue their purpose

Now many of our parents s stable jobs throughout their careers but in our generation were all a little entrepreneur to a weather were starting our own project or finding our role in other

And you know thats great because our culture of entrepreneurship is how we create so much progress

And cultural culture drives when it is easy to try lots of new ideas

Facebook was and a first thing I built

I also built chat systems and games de d tools and music players and alone

J k row Ling got rejected twelve times before she finally wrote and published Harry Potter

Even beyond c had to make hundreds of song To Get hello

The greatest success is come from have ing 的freedom to fail

Now today

We have a level of wealth in equality that hurts everyone

When you can when you have the freedom

To take your idea and turn it into a historic enterprise

We all lose

And right now today our society is way over index on re war Ding people in their successful and not do nearly enough to make sure that everyone can take lots of different shot

I know that space that

There is something wrong with our system

When I can leave here and make billion of dollars and ten years while millions of students can t even afford to pay off their loans let alone start a business

I know a lot of entrepreneurs

And I dont know a single person who gave up on starting a business because they were worried a might not make enough money

But I know too many people who have a chance to pursue their dreams if they dont have a cushion to fall back on if they failed

We all know you dont get successful just by having a good idea working hard

He get successful by being lucky too

If I m just support my family growing up instead of having a time to learn to code

If I dont know that I was gonna be fine a Facebook can work out that I would be standing up here today

Ne for honest

We all know how much luck we ve had To Get to disappoint in our lives

Every generation expand its definition of equality

Previous generations fought for de vote and civil rights

They have a new deal and great society

And now its time for our generation to define a new social contract

We should have a society that measures progress not just by economic metrics like GDP but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful

We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure that everyone has a cushion to try new ideas

Were all gonna change jobs and roles many times so we need affordable childcare To Get to work and health care is not I just one employer

Or all gonna make mistakes so we need to society that is less focused on locking a stop and dig ni ty that s when we do

And as our technology keeps on of all we need a society that is more focused on providing continuous education through our lives

Yes

Giving everyone the freedom to pursue purpose is gonna be free

People like me should pay for it

And a lot of you are gonna do really well and you should do

That is why personal and I started that and soccer berg initiative and come it is our wealth to promote ing equal opportunity

These are de value the of our whole generation

It was never a question if we were gonna do does

The only question was when

Millennium or already one of the most terrible generations in history

But its not just about giving money

You can also give time

And I promise to do

If you just take an hour to a week

Thats all takes To Give them a hand and help them reach their potential

Now maybe you are thinking thats a lot of time and mature if I have that much time

I used to think that

You want to steal a graduated from Harvard she became a teacher and before she do education work with me she told me that I need To Get my own experience teaching a class

At first I complained

You know kind of busy running a company

It Jim said

So I taught

And after school program data local boys and girls club entrepreneurship

De taught me what was like growing up feeling targeted for your wrist

What its like having a family member in prison

I scared stories of my time in school

And a sure there hope that one day day would get Togo to college tu

For five years

I had dinner with those students every month

One of them even threw priscilla and me our first baby shower

And next year I m gonna call every one of them first generation in their families

We can all make time To Give someone a hand

Lets give everyone the freedom to pursue purpose not just because its the right thing to do but because when more people can turn their dreams into something great we are all better for it

Purpose does not only come from work

The third way we can create a sense of purpose for everyone is by building community

In our generation will we say purpose for everyone we mean everyone in the world

Now quick show of hands

How many of you here are from an other country

Company view our friends with one of these facts

Now or talking see we have we have grown up connected

In a recent survey of money around the world asking what most to find our identity

The most popular answer was a nationality of Mr d or religion

It was a citizen of the world

Thats a big deal

Every generation expand the circle of people we consider one of us

In our generation that now includes the whole world

We understand that a great arc of human history bend towards people coming together in ever greater numbers from tribes to cities to nations to achieve things that we could not on our own

We get that our greatest opportunities are now global

We can be de generation that ends poverty that ends disease

And we get that our greatest challenges need global responses too

No country can by climate change alone or prevent and m ix

Progress now requires coming together

Not just as cities or nations but also as a global community

But we live in an UN stable time

There are people left behind by globalization across the whole world

And it stuff to care about people in other places where we dont first feel good about our lives here at home

There is pressure to turn in words

Dis is a struggle of our time

Forces for the flow of knowledge trade and immigration

Against those to it slow them down

This is not a battle of nations

It is a battle of ideas

There are people in every country for more global connection and there good people against it

And does it can be decided d u ne der

It can happen at a local rebel

When enough of us feel a sense of purpose and stability and our own lives

That we can start to open up and care about everyone else to

And a best way to do that

It is a start building local communities right now

We all get a lot of meaning from our communities

For years from Ali a cost

他之所以八点

Our communities are houses or sports teams church is or ah couple of groups day give us a sense that we are part of something bigger

The we are not alone

Day give us the strength to expand our horizons

And striking that over the past few decades membership in all kinds of communities has declined by as much as one quarter

Thats a lot of people who now need to find a sense of purpose somewhere else

But I know that we can rebuild these communities and start new ones because many of you already are

M admin is a very

He is graduating today at the story

Navigate with human trafficking in Uganda

And now he res trained thousands of law enforcement officials to keep communities safe

M a l o o k in ni hi Jane

Graduating today to a stand up guys

K ne a started a non profit

That connects people suffering from chronic ill nes ses with people in their communities were willing to help out

And I met a v Dr Xu s graduation from the Kennedy school today David stand up

David isa former city council or who sought to make Mexico city the first Latin American city to pass the marriage equality even before san Francisco

A mistake is my story to do

A student in a dorm

Connecting one community at a time

In keeping at it until one day we can connect the whole world

Change starts local

Even global change starts small with people like us

In our generation the struggle of whether we connect more when we achieve our greatest opportunities comes down to Dis

Your ability

Build communities and create a world where every single person has a sense of purpose

Class of twenty seventeen

You are graduating into a world that needs purpose

And its up to you to create it

Now maybe you asked yourself

Can I really do does

Remember I told you about that class I ta boys and girls club

One day after class he was talking to my students about

Go to college and my top students raised his hand and said that he was UN sure he could go to college because he is UN doc u men to

He was UN sure sh aken

Last year I check it out To Breakfast for his birthday

Finally said you know I really just like a book on social justice

I was blown away

Here isa younger guy who has every reason To Be physical

He was UN ter is a country he calls home

The only one is own

Was gonna deny him his dream of going to college

But he was UN feeling sorry for himself

He was name thinking of himself

He has a greater sense of purpose and you gonna bring people along with him

It says something about our situation today that I can even say his name because I want to put it risks

But the high school senior

Sow before you walk out those gates one last time

And as we sit here in front of memorial church

M reminded of a prayer

Mr bear a

The nice day whenever I faced a big challenge

So I think to my daughter thinking of her future when I talk or in at night

And it goes

Made a source of strength

He is blessed the ones before us

Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing

I hope you find the courage to make your life a blessing

Congratulations class to twenty seventeen good luck out there
