Uh
I think if everyyou want here's this thing like that's the way a lot of careers go is you're not actively going out there trying to find something opportununities are coming to you
Because you're in the right place
The right time
But that that only happens
Because people know where you are
As you like companies are hire you
People hirry you in the same way that people don't buy products from you
If your own sales a person buys to part from you
And so like companies
Companies don't do things
Companies are collections of people
And so i think i learned there early that if i want to be hard by someone loggally ally know know i am
Like me and if i want to have sell something
Someone logically have to know what i am
And want to buy product to the mcense
So okay

My guess this week is james rebound the former senior
Director
Product and linkting jim's journey is definitely attestment to pive it
He started with a psychology degree from stanford
Wororking in sports management
Before transitioning into the consulting world from consolting
He joined a rockish back then linkting and inhivited a few times is from sales to marketing to product
And have led teams across multiple regions
Besides his steada career
James is also a big influencer on linkam
And has developed thupperbal king content over the years
In this interview
James revealed his inspirational tier career and live transitions

He also gives how what advice for people
Who want to create content

What to focus on and how to stand out
And so interested in dive deep
There uh what what is that moment um may you realize ze want
Want be uh operator um yeah
And how did
How did that moment ent so so it's all about that pivd and transformation moment
I'm trtrying to take here
Yeah
Yeah again
Because
Because acactually aa my courage ge example like being having relarelaship with correpeople
So i graduate ate ii were go to be in for couple years i went to business school
I went to went to went at school a couple years uh came back to bin
Because bame was nice up to pay for my schoolling and about a year after i got back
I got a call from someone who went at the ban who had joined linked to about a year ago
About a year or more
对对
And he bases said to me
You know where are couveries exploding
It's
It's mazing you'd come join
And so i didn't meet you say yes
But i started reflecting on okay
Well now i have this soulterternative path
I can go to join linked chanssiing
And i can have a job like you know seem like he was pretty keen hirry
Or i can say it exexlting uh ranks
And the more i thought about it
The more i realize that the sill that was getting to learn and consulting
I thought would be differently useful to say and consult it
So at some point you start learning skills
That are more and more useful
Only if you say nothing in that field and think and i'm sure
But as many people that who stand consulting long united
Who have fired a lot of by unit
But once i would realized that i was begtting to learn what i would call consulting specific skills
I thought okay
Great
I've kind of learned the basics of business and how to structure a problem
And had to communicate and how a work er's small team
Thank you being love being now now let's see
Like you take those learnings and apply gray hyperotech of body
And that happened me
Because my friend join litten
And so so it seems like all the opportunities
Uh it just came to you
You are not activiseeking you
You yeah is is that the correct and uh the way to put it
Uah i think the video the only exceptions that one i can take others
My first job of the one i've mentioned that i was part of the olympic committee
I happened to read these stanford magazzine you ah thewas the physical magazine that explained how the leader of the organzation with a stanford dred
And so i ended up
Reaching out to her
I could have
Yeah how likely pestered her for several months to hire me
So that one didn't come to me with what the one that me and i had applied to main as well
But yeah
I think a very big value at ligtiin the company which was roal told up a second is relationship matter
And a relationves matter means that they are lologiical out there who who know me
Who i ally have a nice opinion at me
And therefore they're thinking of pottering on something or hiring somebody do something day i do really think of it
And so i think if acreally wanre's this thing like that's the way a lot of careers go is you're not actively going out
There are trying to find something opportunities are coming to you
Because you're in the right place
The right time
But that that only happens
Because people know who you are
And you like companies don't hire you
People hire you in the same way that people don't buy products from you
You're in sales
A person buys price from you
And so like companies
Companies don't do things
Companies are collections of people
And so i think i learned there early that if i want to be harry by somesomeloggally with the where i am like
Like And
And i want to sesell something
Someone logically have no nowhere i am and want to buy my product to the mcencenence okay
Yes i was saying you know let's dive into a lindn journey
Uh you joined obviously uh a very earearly stage of company
Company you did bunch of things
As well i think the company also let's buy my product
Vertimes times you know during your tenner like how did that uh you know
Uh i guefrom the ceos and marketing
Uh side the things and you transition to product
Uh just interested to hear about the journey
There um a lot
It comes back to people
Where i join linton
Because i well well at least
But i joined and i trusted his judgment and so he
When he was to get welcoming to work for he got down in two companies
One was called linked ton
The odoes was called queen stam
I guess the one is called why to make the queen street q you i ends street
They do like ad retargeting
And you except to my point is reduo most of you who watching ing
Parparyhood licdein
I'm sure a very few
He heard of enenry
That
That said he's joined queenen ry and hold me
I don't join him so i
So my judgement is interesting him
And his judment is a picking in right company
But he was
You know he's also also hps ra
He's also a in person
He's yes quite he's very very great times in my inion
And he do you think this has something to do with a psychologgy degree
You're quite a good at people reading 啊
I don't know
I mean he
He was his very very talented at it being
And that was afraid of easy one
I think everyeveryone did dn't work with him
Like he's 's going places
But i'm just saying there's a lot lot luck in this
Because if he joined queensree
Which she easily could have
I would have joined him a queen street potentially or not and we wouldn't have
Have conconvertion or not and you know linked in is not to she a company of people hard of and respect queensy 's ak ted company
But
But not not had the enough lked ked to and so batch her question
I 对嗯joined in the sales ag at lindton
Because
Because we're damned work
He works msales domgton
So it was again one of those i trust him
He has good judgement
If he tells me this is important place to which to work
I were going in
I got very lucky
Wean enough
Yeah
He 's amazing his boss he tting very lucky is amazing
So i wrote about monlkin weeweek
Then
Then boboss every thing ner was seallike it
So i essentially like locked out
That my direct reporting chain were three incredibly grss of people all we can different skills in different assets
But they were incprobably talented so i spent the first three and a half years and the sales or um doing bubuch of worked doing like licton's complete hypergrowth
I was working as part of the pretty business
Prepretty business
Business
What i joined was doing forty and just ten forty million dollars until and nine um we went forty one hundred and twenty
Twenty and ty three five hundred and eighty
Three nine hundred and one space we what we went from forty to a billion and five years
Which is 个upsepretty unusual and through that process
I uh got a working about a different areareand comcompany and
And a working different areas going to me a roll open up on the marketing
Where the protesting who had been doing at sightof the company and a few folks okay
This seems to go all that you might be good at what do you think
And i thought i'm definitely beliein in ah in stretching
And
And make you when you're go to the role
If you're a roll over too long that things happen
You wan't like keep stretchching specially earen in your career maybe changed when it look further long
And so i decided that taking on this new role would be a good decision
Did that for few years
Now i think maybe that's great
Then Then
Then ry the big condition point was so
And this is actually important
And this is where theis no right wrwrong answer
But i think is important
One at least in a tech company or at least to i can llinked himself
Tech company you use aside what kind of role you want to play
If you want to be a kind of an advisor or in a support role or a service role
That's right
There's lots of functions of that business operations
Corp developments
Sales
Operations
Marketing
This a lot
If you want to be like right in the middle of the action
And you want to be the pof in the the center of the table
The study what's going to happen
And there's only only to my experience
I've been given a advice like believe this is true
There's only two functions that matter that you
You are the build in the product or you're selling the product
And again if
If you're not eto ful tacticals said building
You could be an engineer
Engineerers
Ray
I'm not engineer
It becomes you got to work in product or your worwork and sales
And so i lked dinemas company aneasily must be be companies
When the ceo says he has looking for who's running the business
And there isn't the jam jeral manjor that you ually aren't the two people running the product
And i had a product and the had of sales
And so i just spent a lot of time in the sales or but not actually running a sales team
But i turent about about your time time running ning marking team
So
So i decided this is i guess about ten years ago
So i guess eight years ago that i ananted i need a pick
So i wanted be exexposure
So you i anted inset of the action
And if you wanted in the set of the action dagain again in ii enuout a working product or european sales
Until i went from running a pretty large marketing team
I think about a hundred people to join the product dog
And becoming a nice steken again becomgoing to those tribute up been a team of one
I've seen i was working ideas
But i went from you know leading and managing in all those one words to completely doing again
Because i thought that product than the day especially in tech companies is what different companies and tii felt you know linton is a good product team
Like inds up aa product of from company i thought i would move over them
And so i got i went phone me know big leading big telos
I small a markeside lindton to leading a small what team of one myself
But small small marteteam uh
As i tried to figure out how how the problem
The work ss
And i spend the the last seven seven of lindton ton small small stimilarist slightly changing roles in the athe part so for people
Who who who did not work for inking right
Who doesn't have a presence like you
You know who did not have a following uh
But who are interested to kind of creating content sharing something right
What do you advise them to start right so like sometimes there like a colder right or like uh i don't know ctl right so so should they write things about their codes uh their inion ai um
Yeah
What is some of the general advice you would give to people to kick start build builtheir personal brand
Yeah
A monarchers can say figure out what the audience is figure out a lot stuff like that's no if
If you're doing it for the okay
I'm doing ing
Yeah
I never sharing it off by interesting
I'm never like
Oh
I need to share some the day okay
But h it doesn't fiit
Just if i think so you the interesting
I'll share at twenty to your point
You have acto thinks a eyes interesting
Which here she probably does
And they want to check check elling great
But if they're having like do it
Because it feels obobligation that's always ingly appwarly
Maybe you can usually tell when someone is writing something or sharing something
Because they feel like that i need to get something out verruis
They're doing able to think it's interesting
And so i think if
If you know the advice have gotten over the years
But i always like to see them
You can't inspire someone else titiyou're inlleyou're inspirred yourself in the same way
It's sit trureally hard like engage someone else unless you're engge ed yourself has your leadership style changed over the years
And if so why yeah think it did whait's funny about i'm trying to figure out how much it was a good change
I was about chain
So i think in the early years of linked in
I was really really intense like working all the time just like very very intense
Like it's to came through
And like how much i was like acacso yeah
So and then i think you know gotes't be back over the years around how someone some i dichannel it very well
And i adopsome people and kind of been it saturizlike iii think also let me linked on as well when recovery there was you like breeze
It will be intense
What ccrazy intense to accome that became my meaningful softor and icer untellling what entreme ment lindn is over the loss over the years
It became came a iceer place to work
I'm much
I did not know it was
It was a horrible place to work in the beginning
No
It's a great place to work
Linin on me like intensity scale when i joined was probably six to or
And not not crazy
Y like not you know not ten
Then ii move from a six ty seven
Seven to five to
To five to or four and not not
Linnn became like aa very nice
Like i was
Was nice nice icto six to a one like init was a great place to work
The whole time like do would a nicer er place to over
Over the
Over the
The other time
I was there and
And actually think i've been think that a lot reasontly i'm not sure was a better place to work
I think was just nicer
And i think same with me
I think i became a nicer person son the workwell i am not stfficking a better person to work
Once i guys ys preve nicer
Ii know
You know i'm not saying that you know you could be nice and effective
But you could also be more direct and effective to you as i think if i could channel the intensity of my early years with the kinder commer a much for commcommmer is not worn of my later years that be perfect because i think
I think ii think my style changed quite a lot
And i'm not convinced so you were intense
But do you would you consider us have a bad leader like in early days
I think it can remember my
My boss ss because
And like you know know are your employees would rate you right
I think
I think with intense leaders that sometimes performance probably is not issue uh
But you know when you 're managing down that i don't know is that the feedback in ps score yeably not my issue ah ah
If we needed to pick someone to like go charge the hill and lead a team
And charge the hill
We pick you
The question is so all your team wants lead up
Do they wanted it to game less so like everyone loves like charged with the hill with me
But then they want to charge of second helld me
Me
The third helld with me
Because
So i think there was this idea like uh it would you to learn a lot
But it would be difficult times
I think that was exi get yeah
I
I'm resaswhat was i actually i mean if you to find leadership
I was linked ted has a deficit figure
Like which is leadership is to inspire others to achieve a shared objective or a shared vision in my opinion
The objectives
That we achieved thanks to my leadership were bigger and more important
In the early years of linked them than in later years of lindm
Is that because malayships i was better
Or is that because it was easier to have it impact when linked to them was early
And it was you know being form
And there was a lot more kind of low hanging fruit or a lot more kind of opportunity to build things in the early years than the like year
So it's such one work
I don't know the answeor because again i think you arargue both ways i do
Think it's one where i don't
I now reflect like what i want to do next
I think i want to start heading back in the direction of my early yourself
I'm just trying to figure out how far back to go ii not yes say if
If i used to be here
And i moved to here
I can't figthat i want to be here or i want to be here and i'm probprobbly
I definitely want to move back on direction
I do it
I do feel like in my case i was bad as i became nicer
嗯
I think i became less effective
And uh and um ah h
Maybe i think as i became i had more more patient and more um um accommodme it's better way of putting it
I became less effective
没有没有
没有异议
But i was wondering like if you could share what how how did that transformation moment happen like you feel like
Maybe i wasn't nice
Ih it became nice sir
Ah was it
You know
I don't know some something happened at work or you are kids
Yeah
How did that happen because linked went through the same phase
I think that my early behavior would have been very out of place in later later staage like the studi as linked in momoved this direction in general
I had to dapf otherwise
I was going to have a little problems
And i think stll of it was of that
And it was just i think post kids um you wanted to look of the behavior role modelland
And
And i think that
That made diffedifference
Like i know know aaa lot of it going like linked in evolve as a company in that direction
I think you know our ceo jeff is incredible
He evolved from being superintense exceptional
But like super intense to being a commer kinder leader
And i get
And i am not positive it actually become a better place
Yeah
It just made
It made linked ing nicicer place to are
If that's sometimes so i going like
I used like he
Yours
We're nice
Specifically
But getting llinked to actually became a nicer place to our
I'm not to become a better place to our
And it's so not much bebecome a better company to work out
And then i whther ther did you happen to know
How did jefts you know that transformation happen
How did he become common in color
I don't know
I mean he must have a lot of people that one day day over sudden yeno ah gradual
Gradual
He said ii didn't know jack backing in jahoo days
But i've heard in jahoo days
He was had all the same intensity
But less of the compassion
And less of the kind of soft skills
I think he no
He's a alarted or always
Someone who like he's constantly working on you know improving himself others and seying he must of this over the years realized that to scale lent in him
Becoming no more compassion
Okay
Better compassion and nice so would mean same thing
But i think he folks a lot on compassion
You know preings up in the shoois someone else and helping them
Them comcomprash empathy and action
And i think not everyone realized that compassion doesn't have to be
Be nice compassion could actually be
Like you know what jerry this isn't work now thank you for your efforts
But you're not going to hear anymore
But people tend to confuse things
I think kind of where jeff wanted a channel we're going
And where it actually end up getting channels aren't
Or werenoil the same way i yebut this this this thing i'm not sure
If it's true
Could be actually i'm more wrong and like cmmicate
Even even
And even more ffeffective place to work
But in my experience
I think the intensity dold over the any problem that it's easier to be intense from your creatical
And this this when you're
You know post ipo or quired by micsself narkeys
Yeah
So i do think the uh
I think there's a correlation between how linked in operated and half cessful
Lincoln was not positive
They're actually like going up to and right in the same way
And actually in some ways enabed to impress correlations
So here's the key take away for me
You cannot inspire others
Unless you're inspire yourself first companies don't hire you
People hire you
The mindset of cultivating a good relationship is doing a good job at what's been given to you
Thank you so much
