Take the Long Way Home

The afternoon is taking its time

The air is cool and clear

I know the quickest way back home

But I don’t need it here

There’s music from an open door

A table in the sun

The kind of day that makes you think

There’s nowhere else to run

Let’s take the long way home

There’s no need to hurry

We’ve got nowhere else to be

And all the time we need

Let’s take the long way home

Past the streets we’ve never known

If the evening finds us somewhere new

We’ll take the long way home

We’ll stop beside the little shops

And wander through the park

Watch the windows come alive

As afternoon grows dark

You tell me something I’ve heard before

I laugh like it is new

I think I’d walk another mile

If I could walk with you

Let’s take the long way home

There’s no need to hurry

We’ve got nowhere else to be

And all the time we need

Let’s take the long way home

Past the streets we’ve never known

If the evening finds us somewhere new

We’ll take the long way home

The shortest road can wait tonight

I’d rather miss a turn

There’s something nice in getting lost

With nowhere to return

And when the streetlights flicker on

And daylight disappears

We’ll wonder how a little walk

Became the best part of the year

Let’s take the long way home

Let the evening lead us on

Every road looks better now

With someone walking close

Let’s take the long way home

We can take it nice and slow

The night will find us soon enough

So take the long way home
