Broke, Not Broken

First job

She got it at thirteen

To help mom keep feeding the family

Each day she keeps a strict routine

Sleep work and school no in between

Home life it plays on like a movie

It's her life

But she watches on the big screen

She's so young

But she's addicted to the caffeine

Can't wake up

Without feeling like she's in deep

Saved up

Bought herself an old Tempo

Felt free every time

That she off-drove

Next trip she's gonna keep going

Keep going

Sold off all the things

That she'd outgrown

Won't look back

Got her fingers in an atlas

Crossed paths with some

Travellers in Glasgow

Stayed late

And she rented in the Borough

Five flights of stairs

Just to go home

Mom called

And said you're gonna have a nephew

Said move back

You know she's gonna need you

So she packed

And back across the world flew

A young life is

The only thing that's brand new

No blinds

She fixed it with a clothes pin

No socks

So feet will stay frozen

One stack

Of bills never opened

One tossed

A million more owed and

She'd give the coat off her back and

Lives by her truth she never acted

Can't look ahead she's so distracted

Can't think with all of this baggage

She's so broke she thinks

That it's average

But not broken carries on travelling

So keep going put on another jacket

She's so broke

Not broken just had it

She climbs

The ladders of her dumb jobs

Still hoping something

Better comes up

But she needs to keep

Making quick bucks

She's got roofs to hold up so hold off

She's so strong she's outta her bracket

She's so smart she knows

It's a fact and

She could learn

If she had time

But no she feels daunted

Those s'posed to teach pride

Taught fight battles

Those s'posed to lead

Taught to stay saddled

But I care what she wants

About time

That she gets
