Many states in the US have a strange law that does not allow car manufacturers to sell cars directly to their customers
They have to go through a car dealer
So why
It was set in place in the nineteen twenties and nineteen thirties
You think calm manufacturers were rich and powerful back
Then
The dealers on the other hand
Were small businesses and it was not easy to get a shop
And it was easy for the big calm manufacturers to bully them
For example they would do the good market themselves and let the dealers gnaw on the bones and drink the soup
So back then these laws were laid down to protect small and medium-sized enterprises
But the tide has turned
And to day many new car manufacturers
Such as tesla are selling their own cars to customers
And the car dealer federation are not doing it
Saying, you。 have to sell through us
That's just plain bullying
So why don't the US states change this legislation
It's difficult
After almost one hundred years of being protected
Car dealers have grown up
They contribute twenty percent of the sales tax to the states
They provide eight percent of the retail jobs
And they can't be changed
So you can't talk lightly about protection in the marketplace
Right
Protected grows up and it can easily become a bully
