We walked together one evening

The buzzing crickets were our summer soundtrack

I remember thinking “we never talk, not like this”

We were both looking straight ahead

And she told me stories I’d never heard

A sliver of the person behind the mother

And she turned to face me, and I see her lips moving still, saying,

“Never buckle.”

“Never buckle under the weight of hope”
