Afternoon still burns the shade runs thin
Shadows stretch long where the day begins
Leaves at the edge turn a pale dry gold
I watch them shift soft and slow and cold
The ice shop owner wipes the last small cup
Evening breeze slides through and it picks me up
My thin short sleeves hang loose on the chair
Days like these I can feel them slip somewhere
Summer hasn’t left not all the way
But autumn peeks through the crack in the door
I never got the chance to say goodbye
Now I’m pushed ahead wanting more
A plastic bag tumbles down the street
Streetlights blink on quieter than heat
Someone’s radio hums a tired tune
The sky turns mauve then a lonely blue
Summer hasn’t left not all the way
But autumn peeks through the crack in the door
I never got the chance to say goodbye
Now I’m pushed ahead wanting more
Summer hasn’t left not all the way
But autumn peeks through the crack in the door
I never got the chance to say goodbye
Now I’m pushed ahead wanting more
The wind keeps its secret the night holds its breath
I’ll hold this warm hour close to my chest
One more slow walk one more bright sigh
Then I’ll turn the page and let it lie
