Aha!
Why Do We Spray Water When Ironing Cotton?
Before we iron clothes made of cotton,
we often sprinkle water on them. Cotton
is made of more than 90 percent of
cellulose molecules, which form rigid
bonds with neighboring molecules. This
is why it is difficult to remove the
wrinkles on cotton clothes just by
pressing them down with a hot iron plate.
Interestingly, cellulose molecules are
known to be hydrophilic. Therefore, wate
can easily soften the strong chains of
cellulose molecules, allowing it to
effectively remove the wrinkles.
