Simplicity at its finest
Back when I was nine I sat and contemplated
Blindness
What would make the world seem hidden
I had to find it
collect call from my father
And was reminded
I hadn’t seen him in years
I couldn’t recall his likeness
Momma told me he was away
returning future timing
assumed that he was king
he addressed me as your highness
Told me that I came from rich empires in warmer Climates
But it ain’t register really
My garments weren’t the finest
I certainly wasn’t bummy
By any stretch of a stylist
But I never seen a throne
Only the leather reclining
Of a lazy boy
my grandfather chose for confinement
Uh
What makes a man
The question was the assignment
He was trading me wisdom
Like cigarettes for consignment
Imprisoned me by the question
So I just sat into silence
And stared into the phone
Until the operator chimed in
(To decline this call)
Not much time left
funny what makes a memory
When it sets
Like the sun
Or the ink in the pages of letters sent
Counting down the days
Til the judge reduced his sentence
So before I heard the tone
Hung on to every sentence
Who knew a prayer
Could be hidden in the message
Cuz My fathers final words was
“Rell I hope that you remember me
A complex man drawing off of simplicity”
I been
I been I been
Trapped in this cage
Finding thoughts I’d lost
Back in the days
You’ve been hiding
Hiding
Drifting away
I been calling you
What do you say
This is a prepaid call from
An inmate at the county correctional facility
All calls are subject to recording and monitoring except
privilege attorney client communications
Complex simplicity
Uh
Move with intensity
Yeah
You find a purpose
But reality is trickery
Lotta n****s is real but ain’t as real as they pretend to be
Coppers in my vicinity
Convicts with the history
Armed robberies
Battery chargers we losing energy
Broken mothers wit sons who discover
The slope is slippery
Sliding on opposiiton
With the seamless delivery
Future guards are groomed in a garden
Of white supremacy
Insecurity leading them the roam the penitentiary
And monitor the calls of inmates
Fighting they misery
The cleanest design
Of complex simplicity
Cause I been hiding
Lord I’m trying
You gave time
But I can’t find it
Lost my mind here
Where I’m going
I been
I been I been
Trapped in this cage
Finding thoughts I’d lost
Back in the days
You’ve been hiding
Hiding
Drifting away
I been calling you
What do you say?
