Once I walked a forest way
Winds of twilight round me sighing
Faintly through the branches grey
The last golden gleams were dying
And the world sang everywhere
Like a magic spell about me
Whispering winds and perfumes rare
And a starry host above me
Then within the silent glade
Dimly shining through the shadow
Lo I saw a fair form laid
Like a lily of the meadow
Round her fair brow all the light
Woven in her long hair flowing
Seemed a crown of glory bright
In its golden beauty glowing
By her side a rose bush grew
All the tender buds half sleeping
Half awake the fragrance blew
In the dreams of their awaking
And a wandering nightingale
Sang the dreams of love before me
Woven through the scented gale
All the spell the silence o'er me
