I stood at the crossroads
With a map that was not mine
And every sign was pointing
To a place I couldn't find
They painted arrows on the wood
In letters bright and clear
"Turn left for happiness"
"Turn right for less fear"
But I had been down both those roads
And neither felt like home
One was full of borrowed dreams
The other too alone
So I sat down at the crossing
And I pulled out a pen
And I drew a line on the pavement
That wasn't there before then
I'm not taking the road they gave me
I'm drawing my own line
Across the map they painted
Across the space and time
It might not lead to anywhere
That anyone can name
But it's mine
It's mine
A stranger stopped and asked me
If I knew where I was going
I said"I'm not sure yet
But I'm enjoying the not-knowing"
He shook his head and walked away
With a map in his own hand
And I watched him follow arrows
To a place he'd understand
But I stayed at the crossing
With my pen and my doubt
And I kept drawing lines
Till the sun went out
I'm not taking the road they gave me
I'm drawing my own line
Across the map they painted
Across the space and time
It might not lead to anywhere
That anyone can name
But it's mine
It's mine
Maybe the destination
Is not the point at all
Maybe the drawing of the line
Is what makes the journey whole
And even if the line I draw
Leads back to where I started
The path will be familiar
But I will be uncharted
I'm not taking the road they gave me
I'm drawing my own line
Across the map they painted
Across the space and time
It might not lead to anywhere
That anyone can name
But it's mine
It's mine
It's mine
I stood at the crossroads
And I drew my own way
And the pen in my hand
Is still writing
