Breathing the Bitter Cold

A waning moon slips through the clouded sky

In the deep of night, the stars all melt and die

Freezing winds make the darkness start to shake

Killing every dream, whose heart is left to break?

I sneer and say that love has turned to stone

But still, this aching chest feels so alone

I want to go back to the days we used to know

But looking at the sky won't change the way things go

It’s a dream within a dream, a shadow on the snow

Flowing, flowing, time will never stay

We can’t stop the hours from drifting far away

But this endless longing, this fire in my soul

There is no ending, no way to make me whole

The empty wind blows, cold and so unkind

On my wet eyes, and the ghosts I leave behind

Flowers bloom in waves that crash upon the shore

The dark sea reflects the sky and nothing more

Bitter winds are sliding through my tangled hair

Who is searching? Who is caught within that stare?

I pretend I don't know where our love has fled

But the pain inside my chest is a weight of lead

I can't go back, even if I cross the sea

To the days that now are lost to you and me
