Ashes of Qingqiu

In azure ore,my fate was cast and sealed
You crossed the starry stream,my frozen tomb unconcealed
Where mythic birdsongs shattered in the air
You rested, drunk, upon a lotus heart laid bare
This fox forsook her realm for dreams that gleam
And gambled all her heaven on a mortal dream
Moss gnaws the steps from dawn till night is done
Our hidden nights hoard warmth that eats me to the bone
With stolen plume, you test the frost upon my brow
But nothing cuts as your voice does— whispering my name now
“A-Jin,”you call, a sound so soft and clear
Like a bone flute’s keen note that pierces through the sphere
A thousand years,I stood without a crack
Then you appeared, and all my defenses slipped their track
My foxfire meant to be your guiding, shielding light
Now turns this devoted heart within my chest to ashes, burning bright
In dying starlight, our vow was etched and scarred
A thousand years of Dao— to nine-tailed ashes, charred
The moon’s a dying cup, drained of all its glow
This depth of solitude it cannot hope to show
I fear the stars will drown in endless night 怕
More than your fleeting promise takes its flight
Our hearts’pledge was a mermaid’s pearl, so bright
That turned to dust upon the wind’s first slight
I severed tails to forge a starry guide
And wagered all upon“forever” by your side
Yet lost to this mortal world where snow is brewed to spite
Which swallowed my spirit and quenched my inner light
The moon is ash, the fox is ash, is doom the final grace
When we sought gods, the river’s grip held fast
And tangled in your robes until the hour had passed
Beneath the moon,my foxfire dared not blaze
Afraid the frost would etch its lasting trace
You said,“I cherish glass for how it breaks
A truth as fragile as the world fate makes
But I would smelt all jade to forge a chain
And lock us in eternity’s domain
The moon’s a dying cup, drained of all its heat
This depth of bitterness it cannot hope to meet
I curse the stars that fade and leave no spark
More curse the love that taught my soul its spark
Our hearts’pledge was a mermaid’s dream, so grand
Now scattered as fine ash across the land
I severed tails for“always,” paid the cost
This world’s cooked hate is all that I have lost
The moon is ash, the fox is ash, in truth’s pyre tossed
When glaciers burst,a life’s less than a cry
No parting in this world— a lie drank dry
Nine tails are gone, the moonlight bleeds
I bear the embers of my fiery deeds
Into your eyes’abyss, vast and profound
I sink, with all my ruin, to that ground
I’d trade my homeland for this long-loved ache
And with this form, our final pact I make
