Midnight
Almost home
Quiet street
All alone
Up the stairs
Second floor
Reached my hand
Toward the door
Left pocket
Nothing there
Right pocket
Empty air
Checked my coat
One more time
Then it hit me
In my mind
I left my key inside
My key inside
Standing on the wrong side
My key inside
Phone at twelve
Battery low
Called my brother
No hello
Called again
Let it ring
Nobody heard a thing
Sat down on the top stair
Cold floor
Messy hair
Neighbor's TV through the wall
I could almost hear it all
I left my key inside
My key inside
Home is only one door wide
My key inside
Checked my bag
From top to floor
Found two coins
And nothing more
Old receipt
A piece of gum
Everything except that one
Then I saw the kitchen light
Through the window
Glowing bright
Keys were sitting by the cup
Close enough, but out of luck
I left my key inside
My key inside
I can see it with my eyes
My key inside
One fifteen
Footsteps came
Someone walking
Through the rain
Brother turned the corner slow
Held a spare key up to show
Didn't ask me where I'd been
Didn't even start to grin
Opened up
And walked right through
Like he always seems to do
I left my key inside
My key inside
He just shook his head and smiled
My key inside
Shoes off
Jacket on the chair
Keys still sitting over there
Picked them up
And laughed alone
Next time they come with my phone
I left my key inside
My key inside
One small key
One very long night
My key inside
