A taxi crossed the intersection

Its headlights slid across the wet pavement
Then disappeared around the next corner

I listened to my footsteps for a little while
They sounded louder than they should have

But somehow I wasn't ready
For the night to end
The empty street kept stretching out ahead
Block after block under fading lights
And every quiet minute pulled me a little farther
From the person I had been all day
My phone lit up inside my coat pocket
I looked at the screen then locked it again
There was no message I needed right now
No conversation waiting for me
The city seemed calmer without expectations
Like it was finally speaking in its own voice
A convenience store sign blinked at the corner
Blue for a second then white again
Someone stepped outside carrying a paper cup
And vanished before I reached the crossing
The air smelled faintly of rain and concrete
The way it always does after midnight
I thought about turning back more than once
But every new block looked worth seeing
The clouds had started moving away from the rooftops
And a few stars appeared between the buildings
The empty street still waited ahead
Like it had nowhere else to be
And for the first time tonight
I stopped checking the time
Letting the city carry me
A little farther than I planned

So I crossed it
