All right so get ready
Because we
We gonna dive deep into efforfort sus excellence
And it's a lot more complicated than you might think
Oh ah ah
We've got this new york times piece by adam grant
It's called the myth of effort based grades okay
And he is an organizaall psychologist
He's seen a lot of this first hand
So i think that gives him a pretty interesting perspective right
But the big question here is should you get an a for effort
Even if your work is n't great interesting
And you know we've all been there right you put in the hours
You think you're doing everything
You're supposed to
But the results just aren't quite what you hoped for yeah
But grant to saying there's a lot more to this
Than just like how should we be graating students
I say this is about what we're teaching kids
About how to be successful okay
So what is it about this article that really stood out you well right off the bed
Grant talks about these students
Who are complaining that the're grades don't reflect how hard they're working ok ay though the clclasses taking are considered pretty easy
And it's like they think just because they're putting in the effort
They deserve a top great
You know yeah like the effort itself should be enough exactly
And i think it shows how much our culture has shifted to praising effort above everything else which and someway is a good thing
Right we want to encourage people to work hard
Yeah
When i first read that part about about the students
I actually kind of result a bit i mean
I do believe in hard work here ii ththinking washinga we acknowledge how dedicated someone is
But then as i kept reading grants point started to really sink in we mean well
It's like we've become so fofosed on this idea of the growth mindset
Right it's praising efforforover our natural ability
Exactly
And you know it makes sense in a lot ways
It helps people build a good work ethicc
Yeah
It can encourage people who might not be like naturally gifted in certain areas
Right it tells them they can still achieve things
If they just put in the time
And that's a super important message
Yeah
Especially for kids who may be doubt themselves up
But i think what grand is getting at
Is that there's a flip side to this
That we might not always talking about
Okay Yeah
So what are those potential downsides of only focusing on effort
What grand talks about some research that shows that people with high grid scores
So people who are super persistent
Okay
Sometimes they can actually be a little too persistent
And he talks about
About study it
Where
When had these people with these high grde scores trying to solve these impossible puzzles
And even when it became clear
They couldn't solve them
They just kept at it
Wow
So their dedication was actually holding them back
Exactly
Um that makes you think right it does it's not that effort is bad
Obviously right
But maybe too much emphasis on effort without any strategy or reflection could actually be a problems like effort is the fuel
Yeah
But you still need a good map and the ability to you know change directions
If you need to that's such a good analogy
And have you ever run into that in your own life
That idea of effort becoming a detriment
Yeah
Toally
Ally i think this whole idea
Idea rit
You know sometimes becoming a detriment that really hit home for me
Because i've definitely been there
Or i put so much energy into something yeah and looking back
And like you know that just wasn't the right thing to be doing
Or i needed a totally different approach
It's so easy to fall into to that trap
Especially when we're constantly told to never give up right
But we forget to actually stop and wawait
I'm even to going king on right right like yeah
Even climbing the right mountain
Yeah is just even going to get you
Where you want to go
Exactly
And sometimes we're so busy
Trying to prove how tough we are right
That we miss out on chances to actually use our strength
You know where we could really shine
And that's kind what grand is getting it right
He's saying effort is bad
No no not at all
But that maybe we need to realize is just one part of the equation definitely
And it's not even we the most important part right
And he makes that comparison to olympic swimmers right like we celebrate the person who wins the rate
The one who touches the wall first exactly not the one who trains the hardest are in the most hours
Ours the popool and you know
Makes you think about those students who are complaining about their grades yeah
What if they shifted their focus a little bit
What you mean
What if instead of just thinking about how much effort they're putting in right
They thought about how they could get more at that effort
I like that
That's a really good way to look at it
It's not about dismissing hard work go
It's about being smarter about how you apply it
对的 对的
Okay
So i'm willing to put in the work
But how do i make sure
It's actually getting me closer to my goals exactly
And that means thinking a little differently yeah
Being more self aware
Um being more analytical
So what would that look like practically speaking
Well it could be something like trying out different study methods or maybe talking to your teacher in getting feedback
Or even realizing that maybe this subject just isn't for you
And it's okay to focus your energy on something else you know it's interesting about this is that it's not just about school
Right this applies to anything you're trying to achieve totally like any area of life where you want to excel it's about realizing that sometimes the best thing you can do is change direction
Even if
If you already put in a lot of effort
Yeah
Even if you feel like you've come so far
We get caught up in that sunk cost falacy you know
But that this idea that of already invested so much i have to keep going
I see
But sometimes being able to say up
And that so forn't working and being willing to adapt
Yeah
That's actually a sign of real strength
So maybe we need to kind of update our definition of growth mindset interesting
It's not just about sticking with things in a matter
What it's about being aware of yourself
Being able to reflect
And you know course correct
When you need to i think you're on to something that we can't just have this simplistic view that effort is the only thing that matters yes way more complex
Than that we need to be looking at the bigger picture
Okay so instead just saying good job you tried really hard
Yeah
We should be praising things like strategic thinking problem solving and the ability to deal with curve balls
You know unexpected challengge out a huge shift ft think about what we could achieve if we started teaching those skills from a young age
That's a really interesting thought
But it doesn't make you wonder
How do we actually teach those skills
Like how do we cultivate that kind of strategic thinking and that ability to adapt
That's a great question
And something we definitely need to explore further
Absolutely because if we want to move away from this idea that effort is everything
嗯
Then we need to give people the tools to succeed in this new world
Where strategy matters just as much is how hard you work
And i think that's where grants insight are really valuable
Ohe's not just pointing matters
Hehe's giving us new frarawork for
For thinking about how achihive thing okay and in that framework effort still plays a huge role of course
But it's working together with intelligence and strategy and a willingness to learn and grow along the way
Yeit's like effort is the engine
But strategy is the steering
Well i love that this whole conversation has really made me rethink how i look at success
It's not just about like great and never giving up anymore
Yeah
It's more like effort is still really important
But it has to work with strategy and being flexible and really knowing what you're good at and what you're not so good at right
It's realizing that you know success isn't always a straight line
Yeah
And it's not always about just pushing harder
Sometimes it's about knowing when to try something different or even when did just walk away from something that's not working no matter how much ever you already put in
You know
I used to think if you just work hard enough
You could do anything
But now i'm not assure
Yeah easy to think that way
Especially when we're always hearing about how important
It is to never give up right
But honestly sometimes the most successful people are the ones
We are willing to change direction
You know when sometimes just not work king so as we wrap up our deep dive into adam grants
Piece of the myth of effort based grades
What's the one big thing you want listeners to walk away with i think the biggest take away is that effort is absolutely essential
But what keeps us moving forward
It's not the only thing that matters right we have to be smart about how we're using our effort
And make sure that what what we're doing is actually going to get us
Where we want to go
And sometimes that means taking this steback back and we assessing
You know
Even if we very put in a title of so that's a really good point
And i think can apply to so many different parts of our
Our ves ves so to everyone listening out there as you go about your week think about this idea is there something in your own life
Where maybe you need to shift from working harder to working smarter
What are some strategies you could try
And are there any resources you could use
Or maybe it's even time to consider a completely different approach
Because when we combine effort with strategic thinking well
That's when we can really achieve amazing things
Until next time keep diving deep and keep learning
