Hi
They're welcome back to this episode of english eed america
Could you tell me something about yourself
Greetings
First impression
比如说i appreciate the opportunity to discuss this role
I'm very excited to be here
I'm grateful for this opportunity
It is my great honor to speak with you
那比如i'm very happy to be here
It is my pleasure to be here today
Hello
Everyone
I'm very happy to be in this great conference room
Hello
Everyone
Everyone
正常的表达是i have a basalist degree 或者是i've masterter degree in marketing from 上海交通university
比如说a very interessting in ui design 对吧
I've taken classes in this area
And i helped my professor design sevil projects
I have five years of experience in the tach industry
My previous position was aui designer for alibaba
I in turned at alibaba
And worked on several projects
During which i learned how to do ab tests using modern statistical models
比如说in my final year
My classmates and i build a mobile application
And my role was focused on front end development
I was responsible for creating responsive and user friendly interface
Our project was created in the top ten percent of our class
As a president of the student debate club
I managed the team of twenty people and organized weekly ets
I was the top sales person in my team for two years
In my previous role
I was responsible for managing a team of twenty people reviewing codes and set up standards for product design
Our project received positive feedback from the users
可千万不要用that's all thank you 来说
说一句that's all thank you
或者用英文来说叫any a positive note
我们就可以说i'm eager to bring my skills and enthusiasm to this company
或者说i'm confident
I can contribute to the team's success
I'm looking forward to the opportunity to learn from you
我们完全可以说i'm looking forward to learning from you
I confident that my background in marketing and my skills make me a strong fit for this position
或者说i believe my background alilins well with the requirements of this position
And i am confident that i can make a valuable contribution to the team
Gove ve go
Make you like
Make you like
Okay
You're in the interview view
Know you've done the handshakes the
The hello
And then bm i te you with it that question tell me about yourself
It sounds simple right almost like like small talk
Yeah
Things
Things that way
But it's h it's so much more isn't it
It's maybe the biggest chance you get to make that immediate impact
It absolutely is
Is like your opening argument in court
But you know for your career we touched on general interview skills
Recently
But this specific moment uh it's critical
It really deserves its own closer look right
So that's what we're doing today really getting into this question
Why do they ask it
And do they acaclooking for exactly
And how can you craraan answer tly
That isn't just you know a boring list but a story
Something compelling that makes you memorable
Because it's not just reciting your resume
It's about showing who you are professionally
And uh why you fit this role right now making that impact from the very first first word
Oklet's t's do why is this question tell me about yourself such a standard opening move for interviewers
What's the goal
Well It's
It's pretty smart
Actually it's open ended yeah
And for the interviewer
It's like an instant assessment
Assessment of what and how you structure thoughts
How you communicate
When you're not given a superspecific prompt uh they're ging your confidence
Getting a first sense of your personal
You know could you fit in with a team culture
Ah ok
So it's less about them
Needing the information they have the resume and more about seeing you think on your feet
Precisely they want a quick uh concise pityou of who you're professionally and importantly why you're interested in this job
Their company they're trying to quickly figure out how your background
Your skills
Your interest
How that all adds up to value for them
It's like a mini pitch
Then it's exactly that yeah
Professional elevator pitch define your value right at the feart they're checking
If you're articulate
If your skills sound like they match what they need
It's h
It's good
Good test
Self awareness too can you clearly say who you are in what you bring
And i guess how you handle that vagnness
That open question says something about how prepared you are
Oh
Absolutely it's your first real test in that room
Yeah
You handle something a bit unstructured potentially histakes yeah
And beyond just what what you say
How you say it reveals tons like well a clear structured relevant answer that immediately signals
Professionalism preparation
It shows them your communication style are you clear concise engaging and the specific things you choose to mention that must show how will you know yourself right
Exactly what you highlight shows if you understand your strength
You're relevant experience and crucially where you're headed plus your whole vibe
Your tone
Your deomaner gives clues about potential team fit
Company
Culture fit
So it all feeds into this initial picture
He really does are you are articulate do you seem right for this role
A strong start creates like a positive hay effect
Yeah they can genuinely influence
How they hear everything else you say
And if you stumble at the start
That you plane catch up
You have to work hard to build that credibility back
It just makes the rest of the interview view tentially tougher
Which leads right into um the whole psychology of first impressions that gut feeling really matter how it's huge and there's science behind it
People make pretty significant judgments trustworth than his competence like ability incredibly fast you like within second
Second seriously
Seriously
And those initial judgements they tend to stick in color
The rest to the interaction
It's driven mostly by things like appearance yes and but also very much by your tone of voice in your body language non verbals hugely important
Your post
Your eye contact
Facial expressions
They brought cast signals about confidapproproachability
Professionalism
Powererful stuff is like the thin slicing thing i've heard about yes
That's the concept
Our brains make these superfast assessments based on well thin slicof ininformaum
Now the judgments are always perfect
Obviously they can be right now they're definitely prone to biases like what well the primary effect is big
The first things
You learn about someone tend to have a lasting impact um
And then there's confirmaimpbias once we form and impression
We subconsciously look for evidence to back it up
Wow
So this first few moments ts create a lens through which they see the relenes you got it
And that lends definitely impact hiring decisions
But here's the good news
The empowerpart
Once we definitely manage a lot of this how so by controlling controrolabjust dress appropriately for incontext
Practice good body language um siup straight makes ady eye contact look at the camera and virtual intervieview
That's key offer a real smile
Use a tone
That sounds confident
But also you know enthusiastic
But t's shape that crucial first impression okay
So we know why it matters the psychology behind it
Let's talk about actually doing it
But do you structurous key you can't just list everything and definitely not structurous key that hopes you be clear obviously
But it also signals to the interview view that you can organize your thoughts
Which is a great professional skill in itself make sense there are a few ways to do it
But the most common and often most effective is the classic present past future model present pass future okay
Sounds logical
Let's break that down
Present right start with where you are now your current job
Oh
So great refefeonal future in itself okso this is crucial highlight right h recrecachievement or a key focus that's really relevant to the job
Your interviewing for can you give an example sure like currently i'm a senior project manager
Innovative solutions leading a team of ten um
We just launch a major platform upgrade two weeks
Early actually
Tually
Which ooooted user er engagment by about fifteen percent
Something like that got it start current make it relevant at and achievement than pass yeah
But keep the past part brief touch on maybe one or two previous roles or experiences that directly built the skills you need for this next step
It's not a full history lesson so showing progression
Exactly show how those past roles logically ledge you here
Maybe something like before this i was a software deoperate tech forward for four years
That's where i really honed my skills and say cloud architecture and adjall methods
Which got me interested leading bigger projects okay
Present passed
And then the future part this feels important
It's critical
This is where you connect everything to this specific job
At this specific company explained why you're interested how it its your career goals
And keep it positive focus on growth the challenge
What excites you about them not why you just like your right so how would that sounded maybe um so now i'm looking to take my project leadship skills to the next level specifically in an organization focused on ai innovation like company name
I was really impressed by your recent work and mentioned something specific like ethical ai frameworks
And i'm excited by the chance to contribute my experience to project
Like that h so you're directly answering the why us question precisely and the how can you help us question to it turns your background summary into a targeted pitch for this opportunity so perortortthat model seems great for a you know pretty standard career path
What if your background is a bdifferent career change maybe or fresh at a school good question
Yeah
Present
Past future works well for many
But it's not the only way
If your path is a linear
You might try a thmmatic approach
Yeah
Ah ororganize your intro around maybe two or three key skills or a themes relevant to the jole like strategic planning or client relationship management
Giving a quick example for each from different parts of your background geping by skills not chnololookay or especially useful for career changes or new grads a skills based approach focus on maybe three or four essential skills
They listed in the job adad and give examples exactly show how isn't those skills
Even if it wasn't in a job of the same title
My strength in data analysis
Communication and project coordination
Seem like a really good fit here for instance in my university volunteer role
I analyze donor data to see
没有没有connecting transferable sskills that make sense oththers
There's also a storytelling approach craft a very brief compelling story about your journey
Maybe your passion will drive you leading up to very this role is the perfect next step
If done well concicizzand releantly it can be really memorable
So different structures for different situations
The key is being organized relevant
Exactly organized concise and tailored
Okay
We have the structure
What about the content inside that structure what absolutely needs to be in there to make a good impression right the meet of it
Every single piece should be working for you
Showing your good fit and starts right from the very first words
You say even the greeting
Yeah
Start with a polite greeting
Use their name if you have it
Good morning
Miss carcicia
Thanks so much for the opportunity to talk today or just hello
I really appreciate you take in the time show some warms and gratitude good point simple but effective than what clearly stake your name
And give a quick snapshot of who you are professionally i'm jane deu
A marketing direcor with about ten years in the text space or i'm quick smith the reason
Computer science grad focusing on ai
Just grounds
The conversation okay name quick summary
Then the ective part yes but remember
Relevance is everything filter your background through the job description
Which roles
Which projects really speak to what they need and focus on impact not just duties right the example you gave really are not managed blog
But grew bkills traffic by seventy five percent exactly show results
Excheements
Try decatchers
Skilout and kilkills
Do you weave those ineffectively look at the job out again
What skills are they shouting about pick the most relevant ones
You have then don't just list them
Give it tiny example instead of i leaderership skills try demonstrated leleership
When i tricded my team through that tricky project merger
And we actually finish it had a schedule concrete example
Yes
That's kes technical skills with soft skills
Communication teamwork whatever fits
And think about how these skills lead towards that future goal
You mentioned
And you keep mentioning quantifying things using number
It's
It's just so much more credible numbers make your contributions
Concrete percentages
Dollar amounts
Project gale team siexexthing
That
That's specificity
It makes it real
You can even mentally use the star method situation task action result to frame a quick achievement like a mini story of success
Precisely we need to boost sales task
I implemented a new crm training
Yeah
Sales went up fifteen percent result shows proof
Should you talk about career goals in this centre briefly
Yes
It shows you're thinking ahead
You have ambition framement
So it aliges with potential growth at their company shows your interested in sticking around something like i'm really eager to deepen my expertise in relevant area in this role and loger term
I hope to contribute to strategic projects at a company like yours that values mention of value so they see how you might fit in long term
Yeah
It helps paint that picture
And that final really crucial step connecting it all back to them
The tailoring peace so tasotely non negotitiif if it ounounds generic it false flat do your own work mention something specific their mission or recent project
Their company values
Something in the news about them that genuinely resonates with you
So it shows you're not just applying everywhere exactly i've been following company names work on sustainability
That and really alines with my own passion for it connects your story to their story
You're basically answering there unspoken question
Why should we care about what you just told us
That's it exactly position yourself to someone who understand them yeah
And can contribute to their specific goals make every point answer so what for them okay
Structure content check
But the strulivery that's huge onso it say say say
Oh
Massively ly delilivery voice tone body language carry so much weight
It can raize confidence enthusiasm all that good stuff first off length
Keep it tight hellong in for say one the two minutes
Maybe slightly longer for very senior roles at three max
But honestly shorter is usually better for exacts
It didn't be just twenty thirty seconds
Punchy
Why so brief respects their time keeps them engaged forces you to be focused
Remember it's that elevator pitch idea go on too long you lose them
You seem disorganized make sense what vovoice and one but not clearly moderate pys don't rush that screams nerves enenunciate your
Your tone needs to hit that sweet spot confident and enthfisured but not arrogant and please sound interested enenusiasm
Genuine enthusiasm for the field
For the role
For the company
A flat monotone delivery just kills it no matter how good
Your content is tone says a lot about sincerity and engagement and body language
Especially now was so many videocalls still critical
Yeah
Maybe even more so unvideo
Where they have less information sit up straight open poast your signals confidence steady eye contact is key for report on video that means looking at the camera lens
When you're talking that feels like a eye contact to them good tip
What else for real smile makes you see warm approachble in person
A firm handshake used to be standard
Maybe will be again use natural hand gestres res empmphasize points
But avoid you know figting your nertitics good good on ververbreinforce
Everything you're saying so putting it all together for a smooth delivery requires practice
Definitely practice but the right kind of practice
Youaiming ing polished but natural confident
But still you not memorized
Please know
Don't memorize a scripof word for word
It sounds robotic insincere
And if they interrupt you
You
You fall apart practice the key points
The structure
The flow
But keep it conversational
How should you practice them say it out loud to yourself in the mirror to a friend record yourself on your phone recording is gold you see
And here what they will weiigh your pace tone awkward pauses figeting in time
Yourself get it into that one two minutes zone
So you internalize it rather than memorize it exactly internalized the message
So you can deliver it fluently adaptitive neethrough
And let your personality shine through
It's like practice naturalism
That's where real confidence comes from
Got it okay
Even with great props can can go ong ong
What of the common traps people fall in you with this question knowing the pit falls helps you side step them a big one is the resume regggiitation just reading off the time like yeah
They have the paper
They want the story
The highlights
The connection to this job avoid ded by focusing on that narrative structure achievements relevance what if about getting to personal big mistake keep it professional steare the clear contcontroversy perlitics rejogiooay a superbrief relevant personal al oois okay
Occasionally
But generally no stick to your work life that's rambling must be common through
Oh Yeah
Talking to long going off on tines
It's like this makes you seem disorganized or nervous practice keeps you concise stick to that structure hit your key points
Stay within the time on it and negativity complaining about old jobs never ever do that a ge red flag
Always stay positive frame your reasons for leaving in terms of seeking a positive new opportunity growure challenge alignment not escaping something bad complaining sound on professional full stop
You also have to sound you acacwanna be there the failing to show enthusiasm a board tone slumped posture a huge your chanchannot your genuupointerest in a role
Popity prepassion is appealing and sounding like a robot reading a script
Yes
The overly reheard sound it lakes sincerity prevenconnenection practice your points using bulopoints not a full script aim for conversational not can not is really helpful
Does the approach change much depending on where you are in your career like entry level versus excucuoh absosoluit it has to eept and entry level intro is different from a mid career one
Which is different to that exaccutive flage so for entry level
What's the focus potential academic degree
Relevant projects
Course work
Internships
Volunteer work
Highlight transferable skills from activities
Teamwork
Communication show passion for the field eagererness to learn goals are likely short term learn contribute to develop
Hi
I'm name a recent major grad from university
是的
My capps doone project involves creating a marketing plan for a local charity
Which boosted their engagement by thirty percent
I'm really excited to apply my analytical and communication skills and role
Like this make sense focus on education and potential mid career show growth
Specific expertise and attract record quantifiable results are key show highlight roles with increasing responsibility connect your past successes directly to their needs for this role mentioned leadership
If relevant for the last five years
I've been a senior analyticc company
Where i led projects that improve data processing efficsicy by twenty percent
My expertise is in specific area
And i see a strong connection to the challenges outline for this role clear progression and impact and executives
Executive levels about strategic vision
Leadership
Philosophy and major business impact
Think big numbers
Revenue
Growth cost savings
Market share
Executive presence is crucial confidence
Clarity
Gravitos often very concicied
Maybe twenty thirty seconds
It's about strategic value example
Farm name as vp of operations
A company i led a transformation that increed profitability by twenty five percent over two years
By oppermizing our supply chain
I build perperforing teams focus on achieving key strategic objectives
Short powerful results focused that shorp focus itself shows leadership okay
Final area
What if despite all the probe you just mecused up
Your stumble forget something it happs don't be yourself up
How you recover is actually another chance to show cuse
So what do you do in that moment pause
Take a breath collect your thoughts it's okay
Don't apologize refusely maybe a quick so i let me referze that or just commly find your place and continue the key is not to let it dereal
You stay composed
It shows you can handle pressure recover graceefully
What did interinterview ffct honeely ly went well
What didn't especially in the intertro
Why did you stumble nerves not a practice on that point
Use it as a learning experience to improve for next time
Exactly every interview makes you better for the next one
And of course send that
Thank you know it's professionally shows continued interest
And is one last positive touch point
This has been incredibly insightful
Clearly tell me about yourself is way more than just breaking the ice
It's a strategic move
It really is it's your first best chance to frame the narrative tive you
Your value make a connection
It comes down to preparation
Taylred to them
Focusing on relevance keep a concise that one a two minutes delivering confidently
Both verbally and nonverably and being authenand and a strong start to set such a positive tone for everything else builds that report that credibility
Makes that birth impression count definitely
And you know this skill introducing yourself
Effectively it goes way beyond interview ws
Networking
Meetings
Presentations
It's a core professional skill
It's about owning your story
So that confidence comes from compedence
Which comes from doing
The work
The research
The structuring the practice
If you understand it prepare for a practice
You can turn that question into a really powerful moment
Think about this way
If you struggle to clearly and precicisly talk about yourself and your value
How persulacively ub
When talking about complex business problems or solutions
Mastering this intro is fundamental
Maybe think about where else in your professional life
Could you sharp compelling self introduction make a difference
That's food for thought
