A coin slipped out when I reached in my pocket
Hit the sidewalk, spun around twice
I put my foot out trying to stop it
Missed by an inch, there goes my luck
It rolled to the curb, slowed for a second
I thought, okay, I've got you now
Then one last turn between the metal
And there it was, shining underground
I could see it
I couldn't reach it
That's what made it hard to leave
If it had disappeared completely
I'd probably be halfway down the street
Down the drain
there goes my change
Funny how a little loss
can take up your whole brain
Down the drain
I should walk away
But when something's almost in your hand
it's harder not to stay
I found a stick and tried to move it
Left a little, right a little
Every time it came toward me
one wrong touch sent it back again
Five minutes passed
then maybe seven
Now I wasn't thinking what it cost
I just wanted one small victory
over something I had already lost
A bus pulled up across the street
I heard the doors and saw the light
I could leave the coin and catch it
or try one more time
One more time
that's what I said
One more time
then one more again
Funny how"just one more"
can steal ten minutes from your day
Down the drain
there goes my change
Now the coin is still down there
and my bus has gone away
Down the drain
now I understand
Sometimes trying not to lose a little
makes you lose more than you planned
I stood up straight and brushed my hands
Watched the next bus coming down the road
The coin was still exactly where it was
but somehow I could finally let it go
Not every loss needs fixing
Not every wrong needs one more try
Sometimes leaving something where it fell
is how you keep the rest of your day
Down the drain
let it stay
A little coin taught me
in a very ordinary way
Before you spend an hour
trying to save a dime
Take one second
and check the price
Sometimes what you're saving
isn't worth
the time
