September Light - BeeWaee
A grocery store was almost empty
When I stopped in after work
I bought bread, a bottle of milk
And flowers
I didn't really need
A girl behind the counter
Said they wouldn't last too long
I told her that's all right
And carried them home anyway
I think I'm learning
Not everything has to stay
In the September light
Things look softer somehow
The life I thought I'd lost
Is starting to feel like mine
In the September light
I don't need to understand
Why some people leave
Or why some feelings end
I put the flowers by the window
In a glass I found upstairs
Made something simple for dinner
And ate it standing there
Your name came up in a message
From someone we both knew
I read it once, then locked my phone
And went back to what I was doing
A few months ago
That would have ruined my night
In the September light
Things look softer somehow
The life I thought I'd lost
Is starting to feel like mine
In the September light
I don't need to understand
Why some people leave
Or why some feelings end
I used to need a reason
Something clear enough to blame
But maybe we were only two people who changed
I don't think that's beautiful
I don't think it's unfair
It happened
And it hurt me
And now I'm still here
In the September light
I can see the room again
Not as where you left me
Just as where I live
In the September light
I think I finally learned
Some things can be over
Without taking everything with them
The flowers won't last forever
I'll throw them out when they fade
And maybe buy some more
On another ordinary day
