There were times when I wanted to lean on someone near
But I never knew how to ask or make it clear
So I kept everything locked up deep inside
And learned to say"I'm fine" with nowhere left to hide
Maybe deep down inside, I was hoping all along
That someone would notice and sing a different song
I waited for a hand to reach out and pull me through
Hugging my knees tight while the hours drifted out of view
To start anything new or try to make a start
The strength of just one person is too small for my heart
So I used it as an excuse to step away
Saying,"Anyway, there's nothing I can do today."
Here I am, unable to count on anyone I meet
Unable to trust, unable to make my world complete
I convinced myself I couldn't change or try
Because giving up felt easier than asking why
But perhaps the real truth underneath the test
Is that I was simply terrified of the rest—
Afraid to give a name to the weakness in my chest
On the nights when I couldn't say"Help me" through the dark
My own voice sounded distant, losing every spark
I hid all my injuries away from every view
And pretended not to see them, too
I used to think that staying completely on my own
Meant enduring everything without a helping stone
I believed that was what being strong was all about
That's the story that I told myself without a doubt
Even when a hand was offered right to me
I looked away across the stormy sea
Not because I couldn't reach and take it in my grasp
But because I feared losing the fragile breath it would gasp
If even right now, in this quiet place
I could let my voice out just a little space
Would it be a loss that leaves me far behind
Or could I call it a beginning we can find?
Counting on someone, trusting someone new
I'm still not very good at doing what they do
But I will never call myself again
"Someone who can do nothing" in the rain
From this very spot where I hugged my knees so tight
Just a single little step into the morning light
I want to try and move forward toward the sight
