The morning market on Main Street is open now
The farmers in dirty aprons hold the old plow
A girl in a straw hat sells ripe peaches from a crate
She smiles and says, “my boy, you never have to wait now”
I taste the whole summer in a single tongue
And for a moment, I am not among them
The paper bag turns so damp and begins to tear
I wipe my hands on my jeans, it feels so right
A guy in a truck honks twice from the left lane
I step aside and wave at him again
The old man at the stand wipes his rugged face
He nods at me and gets back in his small place
I came in with an old heavy bag of yesterday
But the morning gave me a different way to see
So I take a deep breath and a new stride
The weight of that old load has gone outside
The city wakes up
Blue and pale on a summer day
I feel the fresh air filling my chest
And the day is giving me its best
The pavement feels warm
I walk with a lighter step, no alarm
A stranger's smile is a tiny key
And the world is playing along with me
Let's go now
The whole morning stretches out so wide
I cross the avenue where the buses glide
A kid on a scooter rings his small bell
He speeds past and I laugh at the low sound, oh well
A dog pulls its leash near the cafe side door
The owner steps out and asks me to do a chore
I help him carry boxes of apples to the back
He laughs and says, “You're the finest in the whole pack”
I shrug and wipe the sweat from my aching brow
The little bell above the door rings right now
The city streets are breaking into a slow dance
And everyone is getting another fresh chance
I never knew a simple trip could change the whole sky
And every storefront that I pass is just waving hi
I tap my own hand on the metal rail
And the steady beat inside will not fail
The city wakes up
Blue and pale on a summer day
The load I brought is no longer here
And every step is a brand-new cheer
The morning feels real
I'm humming a tune I don't know but feel
My own feet are tapping out a beat
And the rhythm has me on a new seat
Move ahead
