Autumn floods rise, the river runs wide.
Seen from the sea, all tides abide.
The river god watched his waters swell
Thought all the world was his to tell
Banks so far, he could not see
The difference between two shores could be
Pride filled his heart, he looked down with scorn
On every stream that was smaller born
Till he reached the edge of the Northern Sea
And faced the endless, unbroken deep
All our views are bounded by the sight we own
Small minds judge hard, but the great unknown
Shows how brief our pride, how vast the endless whole
In the Dao's wide eye, no rank, no role
Autumn water flows into the endless sea
All our small vanities cease to be
Let go the pride, the judging eye
In the cosmic calm, our souls fly
No great, no small, no high, no low
The Dao holds all, lets all things grow
When the heart expands to the endless deep
All earthly strife will fall asleep
The Ocean Lord smiled at his small belief
Said “You see now how your mind was brief
Talk not of the sea to those in wells
Nor summer insects of winter's spells
All things have their place, their bound, their time
To judge is to lose the greater design
Your river is great, but not the whole
Of the endless, turning, living soul”
The frog in the well calls the sky a rim
The summer insect knows no ice's hymn
We are all bound by the place we stand
Open your heart to the Dao's great land
Autumn water flows into the endless sea
All our small vanities cease to be
Let go the pride, the judging eye
In the cosmic calm, our souls fly
No great, no small, no high, no low
The Dao holds all, lets all things grow
When the heart expands to the endless deep
All earthly strife will fall asleep
Autumn floods rise, the river runs wide.
Seen from the sea, all tides abide.
