Your host george
Today i want to talk about a specific kind of desire
You know that feeling
When you want something
You really really want it
But you also have this nagging feeling
That you're never actually gonna get it
I'm not talking about something impossible like a trip to mars or winning the lottery
I'm talking about something that is technically within reach before some reason remains just out of grasp
It's what i call an unattainable desire for me
That object is a photograph now in this digital age of spotify and apple music
Some of you might be wondering
What exactly is a photograph let me paint a picture for you
A photograph often called a record player or turntable is a device
That place sound from a disdisbut
It doesn't use lasers or digital codes
It uses pure physics
It has a tiny needle that physically touches the disk and vibraates
As it spins and the disk we sometimes call it vinal
It's a large flat black disk made of plastic specifically polyvanal colorde hence the name
The surface of this disk are thousands of microrocopic groups
When the needle runs through those groups
It creates sound is an analogue technology
That days back over a hundred years long before mp three es or strestreaming ever existed
So why would i want this old technology
Well that brings me to my story
It starts a few years back
There was this local spot
I absolutely loved
Which is a bakery and coffee shop
That i visited all the time
One day out of the blue is shot his stores
I was devastated
It felt like a little piece of my daily routine had just vanished
But then a few days later
Something surprising happened
It reopened
But it wasn't a bakery anymore
He had to transformed into a vital record store
I remember walking inside for the first time
The smell of coffee was gone replaced by the sent of old paper and copboard sleleeves
The walls were covered with the images of famous singers
Legends from the past stars
From the present and standing
There surrounded by all that music history
I was hit by a sudden wave of nostalgia
It took me straight back to my childhood
When i was little
We had this large black box in our living room
It was a combo player
It could play both cassetts and vinal records
I had this vivid memory of my mom using it
I can see her picking out her favor record
Carefully taking it out of the sleeve and placing it on the platter
I remember watching the needle drop fascinated by the way it moved across the groups
Translating those physical bombs into music
It was in that exact moment
Standing is that new record shop
Not the idea planted itself into my head
I need to get myself a record player
So naturally
I did what we all do in the twenty first century
I went straightto amazon
I went through pages of options
Until i found the one
It was beautiful
It was a phontograph
That looked like it came straight out of the nineteen
Twenties a classic turntable with a huge vantage brass ass horn
But it was modernized
He had blue tooth and usb slots
It was the perfect mix of old school aththetic and modern convenience and press tech
Six hundred dollars
Now six hundred dollars is not a small amount of money
At the time it felt a little sleep
So i did the responsible thing
I saved it to my cart and told myself
While just wait for black friday
Maybe i can snack a better deal
But you know how life is it was a way of distruction
You black friday came
Black friday went
And in the chaos of work and daily routine
I completely forgot to check out the moment past life just moved on
But here's the thing i didn't really forget about it
My job at the time is phanatics
I'm a fantician
My entire professional life revolves around sound i work with audience
Every single day every time i pick up a pair of headphones or stare at some waves of spetrograms on my computer screen
That phontograph pops back in my mind
It's always there lingering in the background
And yet the professional side of me is constantly fighting with a sentimental side
Logically i know the harsh truth
I know that a six hundred dollar
A photograph with a decorative horn will probably disappoint me
I know for a fact that it cannot compete with the audio fadelity of my reliable sixty dollar studio headphones
A modern digital didio is venan precise and accurate a rnal is you know not quite perfect
It has crackles pops and surface noise
So why do i still want it
I've asked myself this question for years
Why haven't i bought it
Is it the money
Not really is it the space
That's part of it the moment
I get closed to clicking by the practical question flooding
Where should i put it does the dead core in my house
Even fit a giant advantage horn and the biggest fear of all would it just end up like my tread meal
You know that thing
That made me feel good for a week
And now just sits in the corner of the attiache silently gathering dust
But i think i finally realized what's going on
I still think of getting one from time to time
Just thought of having that beautiful machines spinning a record in my living room makes me happy
But i've come to accept that what i am yearning for it's probably not the photograph
Itself i'm yearning for that childhood memory of sharing music with my family
I'm chasing the feeling
I had in that vional shop surrounded by the great artists of history
I'm actually trying to buy a feeling not an appliance maybe one day i'll good one
But probably not now because until i have a place that it's it
Or until i'm ready to accept the sound for what it is
It remains a beautiful idea saving my amazon cart
What do you think
Do you think i should get one for myself have you ever had unattainable desire
Please share it with us in a comment section
Thanks for listening
I'm george
And i'll talk to you in the next episode
