When I was young trouble got me down

Thought I was to be the richest man in town

And I tried so hard to believe in something I never learned

And on my way to find the answers I guess I got what I deserved

And every night I slept under the stars

Once I saw a preacher wearing stripes and evil scars

He said ‘Son, what you’re dreaming of is ever shining gold

right outside Sawyer Town at the end of rainbow road’

So I left my home in the middle of the night

Saw my mother’s words written in the sky

‘You be careful with that gold It doesn’t often make things right

Oh you may become a rich man but you can’t buy no pride’

But I was so blind and I took what I could get

Didn’t think about those things my mamma said

I filled my pockets up too heavy I couldn’t walk the line

And I tumbled down down down in that old and dusty mine

Now I don’t know how long I’ve lingered there

Prayed to the Lord above but he didn’t hear my prayer

Oh and finally I realized that this would be the end

When a woman came to save me and I took her by the hand

Now we got married and I got to be her prince

But I have thought about them dark days ever since

When the godforsaken hunger was tearing me apart

While all I ever wanted was a woman’s golden heart
