Edges of the City is a four album conceptual song cycle in which past and present merge in an exploration of the parallels and contradictions between the years 1964-1967, and 2004-2007. These two periods stand as bookends in the ongoing saga of the post-WWII “Baby Boomer” generation, one of the most conflicted generational cycles in American history. It is a look back, from a deeply personal perspective, to a utopian experiment that resonates to this day. Part I, The Ghost That Still Remains, is a bluesy, somber folk rock album, haunted by the backdrop of both the Kennedy assassination, and the Iraq war. Nine songs are followed by a long work for orchestra, December, 1963. Part II, Digger is a garage rock album. It’s subject is power - the power of God, the Devil, the President, the Culture Hero, Good & Evil, Nature itself. In Part III, Pipe Dreams, memories of the ‘60’s begin to overwhelm the present; both 1966 and San Francisco itself become the subject. The music and poetry contrast song verse with a looser, more improvisatory style. Finally, Part IV, Now From 1967, uses a wide range of musical and poetic forms to reference the Fall of 1967, the wreckage left from the Summer of Love. The songs deal with the spread of a new way of seeing the world, recapitulating themes from the other albums, and coming together at the end.... “in the circle of our love.”
