Kathryn Sutherland's latest musical project is blue dirt girl.Kathryn loves to sing and write songs. Sometimes alone. Sometimes with one of her talented fellow musician-friends. Always with a guitar in hand, be it Cleo, her trusty acoustic from childhood, or her pretty, aquamarine Fender Strat. blue dirt girl is Kathryn Sutherland on vocals and electric guitar, Albert Klassen on stand up/electric bass and back up vocals and Jason Overy on drums, percussion and back up vocals. blue dirt girl performs all original music with the occasional cover, we make our own, and perform.The album Crazy Beautiful was recorded at Hammond Ave Studio's with the fabulous Simon Kendall. Kathryn wanted a live feel for this album and that is what you will hear on all the songs. Many of the tracks were live off the floor, both vocal and instruments, we sat in the studio and played together and that is the vibe you will hear. A live in the moment recording of all the blue dirt girl's songs.We were lucky enough to have Simon Kendall play on many tracks with his Hammond Organ, Farfisa, Grand piano, Harmonium and Accordian, in addition, he added his manly angel back up vocals to many songs. Simon also invited Evan Arntzen, Jazz musician, to sit in on clarinet and saxophone on Dark Heart, Shed a Tear and our cover of Rhianna's Stay. It was a distinct pleasure and joy to record this album with Albert, Jason and Simon. If you are wondering where the name comes from here is the story. Kathryn was mulling over names for her new music project, trying to incorporate her love of nature, sky, prairies, land and travel. During a trip to Florence she spotted an image on an electric panel, of a Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring but with some wonderful underwater additions, was immediately struck by it, and asked her sons and husband to take pictures. Kathryn was writing a song, about this curious girl who could breathe underwater, my blue dirt girl, and my sons said mom that fits all your loves.
