It’s proud, unabashed guitar pop -- stressing melody and lyric, structure and style -- that embraces the sonic & emotional layers and colors found in reliable creative expression. As a teenager in south Florida, Douglas discovered his father's music collection which read like a who’s who of celebrated melodic rock from the ’60s & ’70s: Beatles, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, The Ventures, Tom Petty, Simon & Garfunkel, Zombies, etc. Douglas continued absorbing songs and musical styles: from surf he discovered shoegazer, from rockabilly he found soul -- all music that is raw, passionate, and personal at its core. Exposure to these masterful sounds provided an inspiring template from which to create. While he was immersing himself in authoritative pop & rock music, Douglas studied classical music at University of Miami and gained a completely different musical vocabulary through music theory and performance. After time spent in the United Kingdom and a subsequent move to Nashville, he combined his classical training with his pop & rock education, thereby complementing each side with the other and opening up boundless possibilities of creation and variation. With these influences and ideas in mind, he set out to make his own individual stamp on “pop art.” With help from many friends, LIPSTICK PICKUP was recorded over the period of nine months, and was released in 2007 on Douglas’ own independent label, Photograph Records. Described as “warmly cinematic,” “a sonic soak,” and “Beach Boys-meets-Weezer,” the 11-song album speaks of sin & redemption -- and the tension those two subjects share. While some songs address the freedom and intense joy found in fulfilling life’s callings (“When Time Began,” “Lipstick Pickup”), others articulate the restlessness and longing found in the struggle to live by grace in a fallen world (“Starburnt Child,” “Riverside”). Along the way are poignant songs of urgent desperation (“Cast Away”), gaining love (“Angelina”), and losing self (“Lonesome Desperate Love”). Using rich imagery and captivating word pictures, the expressiveness of the lyrics is as multi-tiered as the thick vocal harmonies that saturate many of the songs.
