In 1980, when I first got married, my wife and I rented the upstairs of a 1920's house in Huntington L.I., New York. Near Heckscher park, it was a good deal, it ought to be... we had to use kerosene heaters to keep from freezing to death! With all that money we were saving, I decided to take jazz guitar lessons from a local guitar teacher, Nicholas Zaninovic, on and off for a year or so. One night he invited me to listen to him play at a Jazz club that was in the village.The name of the club was"The Linden Tree Cafe". I sat through a set when he unexpectedly asked me to come up and improvise something on the guitar while a poet friend of his stood beside me and recited something he had written.At the time I had no idea what the poem was about... I still don't. All I remember is responding to certain words or phrases. So, for example, when he'd exclaim,"Up...up...up!" I'd run a scale, low to high... up, up, up!It was a lot of fun and made an impression. Soon after that night, I wrote a"jazz trio" thing... a novelty song where I was the host of this club inviting guests in while my imaginary trio played classic jazz.Since then, I've written jazzy instrumentals and vocals periodically, whenever the mood would hit.Newly recorded, this album is a collection of my favorites.
