The band's varied style of easy listening scrumpy-pop is a medley of Tricks & Cider's musical background of broadway-steeped sensibilities, music school nerds and hip-hop DJing.This is our first EP, and it's eponymous. Each of us wrote a song for it, so it is very reflective of each of the band's members and influences. The songs are pretty easy listening pop-rock, but some of them are slower jazz numbers (Summer Breeze), and there's a rock anthem about video games (Superstar). Girl from Outer Space, the first track, was the one that we played at Yamaha Asian Beat.The EP took about nine months from gestation to birth, and we are so proud of our baby.Girl From Outer Space is a rock anthem written by Victoria Ho and Karen Lee, with lyrics by Jonathan Pflug. We all feel displaced at times and that in yearning to fit in, we often find our own groove in the world.House By A Hill is a love song about getting out of one's isolation because you've discovered a reason to come out of your shell, and about pushing one's horizons to explore more outside of your comfort zone.Post Recording Dreams is about a collection of dreams, both uplifting and sobering. Karen had a dream about recording in a studio, and decided to explore the meaning of her dreams, people's inspirations and what they do with it.Summer Breeze is a jazz ballad set by the sea. It is about cherishing each moment for what it is and living in the here and now.Superstar is a completely non-autobiographical account of heartfelt video game elitism. Dave, who wrote it, is just glad that the chorus is somewhat catchy and the lyrics made his baby niece laugh.Our music is a blend of melodic pop and rock. Our influences are very varied. Karen is a Bach nerd, Dave likes 90s alternative/rock, Dawn is a funk and jazz enthusiast and Victoria wishes she were Karen Carpenter.Karen picked up DJing in 2009, and has spun at House, Dempsey and Azura, and the Boathouse at Fullerton, to name some venues. Dawn went away for music school, Musicians Insititute, in LA.It's not been difficult to combine our interests because we love music, and a lot of our tastes overlap. Learning from each other has been great, and evenings are a common time where you'll find one or two band members spamming the rest with music links online to check out.We hate listing names (because there are so many) but some of our biggest influences include James Taylor, Jonathan Coulton, Little Dragon, early No Doubt, Frank Ocean, The Smashing Pumpkins & Stevie Wonder. It's been tough pegging ourselves to a singular genre, and that's why Karen came up with the idea of calling ourselves 'scrumpy' melodic pop. 'Scrumpy' because it refers to a dry, sophisticated sort of cider, and that's absolutely who we are.
