Originally known as Cinderblock, the band that would be later known as Evergreen emerged from Louisville’s metal scene at the opening of the 1990’s. The band set themselves apart from their peers by mixing elements of prog-metal like Voi Vod and blistering, precise hardcore ala Bad Brains combined with unexpectedly danceable grooves. Cinderblock soon began playing out in the punk/hardcore scene and quickly developed a large following. After signing on with local label Self Destruct the band was rechristened Evergreen and soon thereafter became one of the top drawing bands in the city packing in local venues such as Tewligans and The Machine on a regular basis. Evergreen would release both a 7” EP and a cassette on Self Destruct before internal disputes resulted in the departure of vocalist Dave Pollard and drummer Matt Tucker in the summer of 1993. Evergreen continued on with a new lineup (which included Slint’s Britt Walford) in the mid 1990’s and recorded for Chicago’s Hi Ball Records before splitting up. In 2009, Noise Pollution fulfilled their longstanding desire to reissue the original Evergreen recordings with the release of a compact disc that combines the Self Destruct releases with early Cinderblock demo and live recordings thereby bringing back to light material that has been out of print for over sixteen years.
