Pekingsburg 7014 is Cinema Braille's return to its roots - experimental electroacoustic composition that ignores genre boundaries. But it is also marks a turn in a new direction. This album is the first in a series of works exploring Xenomusicology. Although the term Xenomusicology is often mistakenly used to refer to the study of alien or extraterrestrial music (the proper term for this is Exomusicology), Xenomusicology actually refers to"strange" music, music yet unheard, music that exists only in the realm of possibility. Xenomusicology can be seen as a parallel to xenobiology, which explores biological structures not found in nature. Both disciplines see exploration and creation as inseparable. At the heart of this xenomusicological experiment are 7- and 14-tone tuning systems. These microtonal scales are used throughout Pekingsburg 7014. Applied to vintage digital synthesis (think 1980's Vangelis), these"strange," xenharmonic tunings create and explore musical structures foreign to our ears. In addition to microtuning, other"strange" musical conventions are also explored. The divisions between rhythm and melody and the separation of music and sound design (musique concrete) into separate domains are two examples of the kinds of conventions that P7014 twists and turns. Finally, the album offers a look at our current musical traditions through strange eyes (or rather a listen through strange ears), as distant echoes of our cultures - from canton to the blues - make cameo appearances.
