Béla Bartók is one of the pivotal figures in 20th century music, who has exerted tremendous influence both as a composer and as a pianist, with many of his piano works conceived with a pedagogical aim in addition to the obviously musical ones. His iconic collections of folk music adapted for the modern piano's sound world,"For Children", present Hungarian and Slovak folk songs, harmonized and sometimes varied in a congenial manner with a somewhat minimalist touch. Many of the pieces are just as lovely as they are accessible for pianists at the start of their journey, while some of the more advanced pieces - usually in the latter half of both collections - require a quite solid schooling to be pulled off with the desired effect. The original version from 1909, which is presented here, was revised, with some major changes made, including the omission of a couple of pieces. It can be argued that the revised version would represent the"final" will of the composer, however, the original works clearly have merits of their own, and notably, held their ground until 1945.
