GBS, born Kendrick Holmes, is a 22-year-old rapper that grew up on the Southside of Chicago. Raised by a single mother, along with four brothers, GBS didn’t know much of his father, His grandfather was the man that he depended on to identify with gangs and drugs flooding the Windy City. GBS looked for another way out. As a teen he played basketball, with wishes to play in the NBA. However, school became a task, so he began writing raps with his brother and best friend. Because of his friend’s brother’s local success he let the basketball go to focus on a future as a rapper. His talent for rapping exceeded far beyond his own expectations, which persuaded him to drop out of high school and start hustling to provide for his music career. Everything backfired in 2005. GBS got the call that his best friend, the friend whom he wrote his first rap with, had been shot and killed. Another set back was GBS was expecting his first child. Going through so much, GBS became depressed and frustrated. He and his daughter’s mother got into a fight that landed him behind bars at the county jail for a day and a half. By 2006 at the age of 19 GBS left the streets of Chicago to go to Dekalb IL with a former girlfriend from his much younger days. By September of that year he was expecting his second child, only to learn a few months later that twins were coming. GBS earned enough money to hit the studio to work and release his first, not only one but two mix tapes (Recruited By Tha Streets Vol 1. and Vol 2), which had the streets on lock from 2006 throughout 2007. He met many Chicago locals such as former 106 and park 5-time freestyle champ bo-deal, bump j, do or die and many more. Later on he received interest from his two mix tapes from Atlantic Records, A&R Chris Morris. They requested that he resubmit his demo with original material and change name formally (Souljah Boy). While feeling like the deal was almost there GBS went through another death experience. His 8-month old son, twin too his baby daughter had passed away. Force to not give up, by his son’s mother by 2008, GBS had released his third mix tape (Recruited By Tha Streets Vol 3),which caught the attention from Sublevel Muzik Ceo & Producer Marcellus"PlukeBeats"Thorton who work with many Chicago acts sign GBS to his label as the first solo artist.After inking the deal PlukeBeats brung him right in the studio to work on his debut album and releast his first single"Shawty doing ha thang" which was not a commercial success but was in rotation on chicago top radio station snradio and over 90,000 plays on myspace."My Introduction" is a album many can relate too with tracks like"amount to nothing"where he talks about how people thought he was'nt go be successful,"momma taught me" where he goes in on how he was raised up, and"nothing but the best" a song that tells a lady they deserve and can get everything.
