Math and Science is the band name for multi-instrumentalist John Wolf, a guy who wants to write good songs so bad the rest of his life tends to suffer minor lapses on a regular basis. Still, his heart is in the right place, and this album of ukulele based pop gems, entitled Listening Party, is nothing short of... well, it's pretty amazing. The material here is largely influenced by songwriting styles of yesteryear, channeling tin pan alley, mellow jazz vocalists, and maybe even '70s TV variety shows. How did it happen? John got a ukulele around the same time he was listening to a scratchy vinyl pressing of Tony Bennet live at Carnegie Hall 1962. That's all it took. Anyway, the vocals here are so intimate, it's like you're hearing them inside your own head. The recording is warm and moody. You could listen to this album 3 or more times in a day with absolutely no listener fatigue. Get in there and check it out.
