The songs on this album all began with one man, an acoustic guitar and a musical imagination, growing into layered, full-instrumentation versions, while still retaining their translation back to their simple roots. The instruments on"Charmed" were all written, performed, recorded and mixed by Jason Robey. Without getting deep into the meanings of the songs, here is a breakdown of the stories behind them:1. Devil's Playground - Out of all the songs on the album, this (along with Scratch) are the two that have gone through the fewest changes over the years. Written in a college dorm room in 1998, it is a very representative song of MDEP's style; the perfect introduction to the album. This recording uses both acoustic and electric guitars, as well as a chromaharp on the verses and electric piano and other various sounds.2. Scratch - The only other song on the album that hasn't changed much since it was originally written, during the summer of 1998. The song was written late one night after a concert, a bittersweet experience when you realize you're too old to relate to the crowd, but too young not to relate to the music.3. Pace Car - Another song from a song-writing spree in 1998, the name says it all - hard and fast.4. Circles - This song never felt complete with just an acoustic guitar, but never felt quite right with drums. It was an unplanned performance during one late night session in a studio, which also produced the two other songs on the album,"Was I Meant to Fly" and"Lucky 7." This take uses acoustic guitars, a bass and a variety of hand percussion instruments.5. Chasing Her - Of all the songs on this album, this is probably the brightest musically, yet the darkest lyrically.6. Lost & Found - The first song in MDEP's songbook, written in 1996 and rewritten in 2011, it now tells both ends of the story. Simultaneously dark and bright, it's also the oldest and newest.7. Was I Meant to Fly? - A simple question one would ask while on an airplane.8. Trees - This song went through many changes before it finally felt right. Don't miss the obvious because you're looking to hard at the details.9. Lucky 7 - Written in the summer of 1997, this is the song played for Jason's first live radio performance. It's always been rather acoustic based, but has most definitely grown over the years.10. Steal, Lie & Trust - Another of the earliest songs, this has gone through more revisions and different versions than any other song. Performed at almost every gig since Jason's first live performance, it sounded right on an acoustic guitar live, but recorded, it was always missing something. There are demos of faster versions, slower versions, more acoustic, more electric...finally it sounded complete.11. Where I Stand - Another early one, it was always meant to be heavy, but it wasn't until this version where the guitar solo went acoustic, which actually made it sound heavier.12. Windowsill - Simple, effect-laden and psychedelic.13. Goodnight - Overall, the newest song. A slow song to close the album, musically and lyrically closes the story of the album.Thanks to friends and family, especially Melissa, who helped inspire me to finish this project, which has been in the works for quite some time.
