Once again, the excellent Area Death Productions have unearthed another slab of grisly, forgotten metal. These Chinese lunatics have a knack for releasing some of the most obscure recordings ever spat forth from the underground, and Savage Death is truly a relic. Hailing from a time when extreme metal bands were very few and far between, these maniacs from New Jersey were creating some of the most vicious music on the American East coast. Despite not being overly original, or even the slightest bit well known (even by underground metal standards), Savage Death should hold a place in the heart of any serious underground devotee, or at least, the obsessive collector.1985 was when the ball really started to roll, and while there still was no real underground metal scene, a certain few bands began to crawl out of the woodwork, clutching copies of the sacred few extreme metal recordings that even existed. Bands like Death, Insanity, and many more had begun releasing demos that would eventually shape a new movement in metal music. However, very few of the original death/black metal bands would be able to survive the genre's difficult birth pangs, and Savage Death was no exception, only officially releasing two demos before being stilled by a lack of label interest.The influences and goal of this music is obvious, to revel in the likes of blasphemy being spewed by Possessed, Celtic Frost, Slayer and others. Originally intended as a total black metal band (the then"current" tag attached to any Satanic band), what we have here amounts to some of the earliest attempts at real death metal, pushing thrash metal into new areas of extremity. The cd version of this release is culled from three separate recordings, the band's first and second demos, as well as an entire live set. The disc opens with 1985's"Mass Genocide" demo, a true monster of a recording, with five tracks, of nearly endless thrash beats, razor sharp riffing, and hateful vocals. Though the band is still developing their sound at this point, the single mindedness of their approach ends up being their biggest strength in my opinion. The near constant speed barrage is tempered with extremely catchy riffing and solos that are as fierce as any thrash of the time period, but with an unholy bent lacking from most bands of this period. Occasionally the band will set in to a sweet, brutal groove, but it's never long before the thrash beat sets in again. The bass is a grinding wall of fuzz, that would make Cronos proud, and gives the band a brutal low end not usually emphasized in this type of metal. The vocals are a blackened, raspy snarl with occasional growls and plenty of Tom Araya styled falsetto cries, resulting in some of the most extreme vocals of the time. As far as demo sound quality goes,"Mass Genocide" stands leagues above most 80's metal demos, with a clean, tight sound, with all instruments clearly audible. The band's second demo, 1986's"Crucified in Hell", is a slightly different story. The quality is slightly more raw, and the playing is not nearly as tight. A change in drummer allows for much more speed in their music, but at the cost of much of their fluidity and catchiness, only serving to highlight their lack of musical growth. Much of the change in sound can probably be attributed to the emergence of hardcore and crossover influences in their sound, as this demo has much more of a Slaughter-type punked out metal sound. There are even two songs,"I Impaled Your Mother" and"Kill the Posers", which are more S.O.D. than anything, short goofy songs with obnoxious lyrics and vocals, which depending on how you look at it, either break the faux serious attitude and allow for some humor, or they come as across as being overly stupid and lacking a real point. Most likely they were just done for fun, but I them without real purpose, although some may like they more crossover oriented material for being different and less thrash minded than their previous release.As a bonus, Area Death has included one of the band's only live appearances (a very raw, but tightly focused set, with plenty of goofy stage remarks), along with all the usual, interviews, flyers, and fanzines, that make their releases such a complete picture. In some ways Savage Death were pioneers of this sound, even if they were not the most unique band around, they did breathe some life (or death) into the developing East coast metal scene. On a strange side note, this band does share a lot of similarities with Death from the West coast, i.e. the band's name, many of the same song titles, even similar riffing style to early Death, but I guess it's probably coincidence, as both bands were so deep in the underground at this point, it is doubtful they would have heard of each other.by : BassLord
