GoodRattle is a group comprised of Wil Swindler on alto and baritone saxophones, Gabe Mervine on trumpet and flugelhorn, Ben Markley on piano, Matt Smiley on bass, and Chris Smith on drums. Our concept is to present our take on jazz as"modern bop." We approach improvisation and composition in our music with the energy and freedom of modern jazz and a firm understanding of the tradition of jazz. It's both straight-ahead and cutting edge. We feature the aesthetics of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, various groups featuring Pepper Adams with Donald Byrd or Thad Jones, and the great Blue Note recordings of the 1950's and 60's. Drawing inspiration from these undeniably swingin' masters, we press it through our 21st-century filter to create stimulating, yet accessible jazz improvisation.Our music is hip, quirky and full of surprises -- a must-listen for experienced jazz afficianados and newcomers to this modern version of a classic genre.
