The Baudboys’ sophomore release, “SQL” (a.k.a. sequel), musically traverses the landscape of pop rock, swing, and R&B in the group’s own unique a cappella fashion. And just because they’re geeks doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot of rhythm and soul. The group magically transforms their new set list into a fun, humorous, and thoughtful mix that spans decades of musical content and influence. Right from the start, this CD pumps out tight jazz harmonies with “Let the Good Times Roll”, followed by an award-winning arrangement of “People Get Ready” that transforms from a soulful ballad into a hand-clapping finale. “Freedom 90” is a fun and driving tribute to George Michael’s classic hit, and “eBay” delivers a hilarious view of e-commerce addiction by combining the appeal of the “boy band” genre with the humor and wit of"Weird Al" Yankovic. “She’s Out of My Life” beautifully reveals the group’s mastery of complex and compelling harmonies, and offers a unique vocal interpretation of this classic ballad. Then, to shake things up and give you a nice musical kick in the butt, the Bauds cover Cake’s “The Distance” with a driving beat and rap vocals with a dash of geek appeal. “CA Grlz” keeps both the mood and the tempo high with an awesome futuristic twist on the Beach Boys classic (a la Oingo Boingo). The vocalists and arrangers in the Baudboys are drawn to songs with both strong melodies and compelling harmonies, and Bruce Hornsby’s “Every Little Kiss” shows the group’s ability to take solid and memorable hits and transform them into a cappella versions that are both impressive and fun to listen to. But before things get too serious, the Baudboys show that there’s no better way to solidify their reign as the"Kings of Geek A Cappella" than with a song dedicated to video games. “n00b, A Video Game Medley” is a fun and nostalgic trip through melodies that many of us remember all too well, but with sharp and witty original lyrics that are a ton of fun to listen to. The Bauds continue revealing their eclectic chain of musical influence with “Mr. Blue Sky”, a fantastic mash-up of music by Electric Light Orchestra and the Beatles. Taking a turn for the serious, the Bauds break new ground with their first recorded original ballad. “A Long Way to the River” explores the combination of heartache, regret and hope of someone who left to pursue his dreams only to realize that he’d left his real dream (true love) behind. The CD finishes up right as it started, with a fun and likable up-tempo number. The final track mashes-up Stevie Wonders’ “I Wish” and “Superstition” with jazzy swing harmonies, foot-stomping rap, and a mix of soulful and gritty solos.
