Goralı’s Qualia is an album of recurrence. Loops that dominate it, emerge as loops of memories, moments and thoughts which come together to reflect a state of mind that seems to be stuck in the past but the motion that’s created by this repetition is so tense that it lifts itself and relentlessly moves forward. There aren’t many words in the album as we know it but an alien language seems to be keeping the atmosphere together, painting circular landscapes of feelings of all kinds. An old school, well known sorrow that resonates with this deterritorialized state of mind is dominant all over the songs that are void of words. Guitar loops melt into electronic glitches which vapour out unexpected rhythms with solid references. This is a very solid record indeed that reflects experiences filtered through a stone cold grinder of time but nevertheless manages to keep grains of light, feelings, hope and a lot of thought in them.On tracks like ‘Overcast’ you witness the transformation of an instrument into something unknown through repeating itself forever. Instruments turn into stranger objects, sounds become visible, longing for new words to adequately tell this familiarly strange story. On tracks like ‘Yazın İlk Günü’, the only ‘worded’ song in the album, this circular motion becomes as hurtful as it gets while on ‘En Passant’ it seems to be infusing itself through confronting that ghost stuck in one loop by repeating it over and over in a therapeutic way. These repetitions also work as bridges, creating unexpected connections between songs like say, ‘Closure’ which sounds like a black metal ballad that is heard from miles away-may be miles away from the past or miles away from other lands-and the title track, the very short ‘Qualia’. There are moments when this repetitiveness gets very intense and eager as it happens in ‘Push Push Push’, a song about keeping things on balance in order not to let them fall apart, like climbing a hill with a bike. This is an album of sonic memories or a memoir of things that passed and/or yet to come.
