Listen to the magnetic Mabuhay Brass Band (Juan Silos, Jr. conducting) strike the festive airs of Christmas and everything in your mind strums nostalgic memories of a cold but breezy and happy December. A kaleidoscope forms in the mind of “Simbang –gabi” and the Misa de Gallo rendered complete with “puto-bumbong, bibingka, tsaa and salabat”. Doesn’t the “Krismas tri”, pine tree from Baguio, exude a precious scent you wish the rare fragrance would stay forever? It is not complete without the “Belen”, the “palara” buntings and the tiny, blinking Christmas lights. Outside the house, a “parol” (Christmas lantern) or two must hang. Do they have dancing tails made from “papel de hapon?” Are they lighted with electric bulbs? As the starry night comes the young ones meet for the caroling. And they move from house to house to partake of the little refreshments, the hospitable smiles and whatever is passed on the palm. The kids believe in Santa Klaus. Even without a fireplace, they hang their best socks, the bigger the better. The kids make “mano” to their ‘ninong’ and ‘ninang’ and their hearts leap in glee when they get their “aguinaldos”---candies, coins, and toys. Such is the Spirit of Christmas in the Philippines.
