It’s not simply kid’s music, and it’s not childish music. It is music for children and adults, childlike and silly, fun and fantastical. Like the work of Laurie Berkner and Dan Zanes, it is highly musical, sophisticated and sensitive.EJ’S BIG BOX OF LOVE is the creation of Boston-and New York-area music veterans Jefferson Riordan & Eric Schmider (thus, “EJ’s,” Eric’s and Jefferson’s), who have spent roughly the last two decades—separately and together—rockin’ and rollin’ their way through a myriad of musical situations, from alt-rock and funk to country and big-band standards. But this project captures better than most perhaps, an aspect of their music that is vital and consistent: playfulness. For Jefferson, with his two children as constant sources of inspiration, it has been a necessary counterbalance to his often stultifying doctoral studies at Northeastern University. For Eric, a new father, it has been a happy lead-up to the greatest gift of all.With the help of esteemed area musicians including Russell Chudnofsky (Lori McKenna, Tim Gearan), Dave Aaronoff (The Shods, The Pills, and Dave Aronoff and the Protagonists), and Aaron Gelb (Faith Soloway’s Schlock Operas), among others, Eric and Jefferson recorded this album, sharing lead vocal responsibilities, and engaging in a whole lot of serious silliness.
